I don't really get rainout with this machine. I have a heated hose. I don't know if that makes a difference but so far I think I got rain out like once, and I seem to remember that I knew the reason why it happened... But it's not really an issue so far. Now the smell in the water is. It even happens whether it's on the bed or off I think. I will need a couple more nights to be sure but I keep getting that smell...

If your machine is on the same mattress you're sleeping on, you run the risk of sloshing the water around in the humidifier when you move. In theory, it's really difficult to get water back into the blower on a PRS1 machine due to their "dry box" design, but it's a concern.

As for outgassing, unless the bottom of the machine is getting REALLY hot, you shouldn't generate a lot of extra toxic gas. If your mattress is putting out toxic gas, you're in trouble whether you have CPAP or not.

However, putting the machine on a hard surface instead of directly on the mattress is a good idea.

A lot of foam mattresses stink, especially the memory foam ones, but the gas should not be very toxic, if it's toxic at all. If it was that bad, the people in the mattress factories would be dead.
