Very scared because I don't know what is going on
Very scared because I don't know what is going on
Earlier this weekend, I woke up in the morning and my sound machine was off. Well on Monday morning, it was the case again, but the moisturizing gloves I had worn (and are really comfortable) were also off. That told me I must have turned off the sound machine and not remembered. I was so tired on Monday that I had to take a nap at work during lunch. I went to a show on Monday night (early enough to go to bed at a normal time) and I then downloaded the information from my card. It shows a flow gap that I have no memory of (the second big gap):

Well tonight, I looked through and according to both sleepyhead and rescan, my usage has been really low the past few days:

While it explains why I have been so particularly tired lately, it is terrifying to me. I don't have any memory of turning off the machine, I wake up each morning with my Swift FX on and the VPAP on. I have no idea why this is happening or what to do about it. My Swift FX fits perfectly and I find it comfortable. I have not been overly congested lately either.
Please help!

Are you taking Ambien or other sleeping pills?

I have no real experience with the things you are experiencing, but hang in there because I'm sure others will be able to share their experiences with you.

Don't be 'terrified' - you slept without a machine for years before diagnosis (as are so many thousands still doing it), so a few bad nights or even weeks are unlikely to finish you off just yet, especially as you're getting some therapy, if not enough.
Re: Very scared because I don't know what is going on
I've never taken a sleeping pill. I checked sleepyhead this morning and it continues. I go to sleep at my regular time 10:30-11 PM and wake up between 6-6:40 AM on week days, later on the weekends. Is it possible there is something wrong with my machine?aj43 wrote:Are you taking Ambien or other sleeping pills?

Re: Very scared because I don't know what is going on
I agree with Julie... don't be scared or terrified... it is not all that unusual. Normally, new folks will unknowenly take the mask off at night. We recogmend using tape to awaken you at night when you try to remove the mask. If you are truly turning the machine off at night... I say this because maybe the machine is doing itself.... I suspect you are reaching over and turning the machine off as you would an alarm clock. I would "rig-up" a three-sided box of some sort, and place the machine in the open side- with the back of the machine receiving un-restricted air. That way, to turn the machine off, you would have to take the machine out of the box and to successfully perform this task, you's have to be awake.
I can betcha' one thing... you'll probably will get some forum members thinking-up a gismo (lookin' at you Goof-proof ) that will work for you and your machine. I can see some of them drawing up a spec sheet... of sorts... with a material list and everything also. The homemade things some folks here can come up with constantly amazes me...

Re: Very scared because I don't know what is going on
I did a similar thing. Lasts time I had my data read by my supplier I had two periods when I had periods of 1 and two hours with no flow. I still had my mask on and my machine Running was running in the morning. I felt terrible I must say and could not work it out.
I use the Resmed S 9 Elite and the only thing I can think of as I get up at night that I pressed the wrong button when I got back into bed . Being the settings or control button then got up again , as I do,and pressed the on and off button as I should.
It has made me a little anxious and try to check I have exhaust air when I am up and down at night. I am fairly new to cpap so I am still in that new anxious state to some extent but getting better all the time. When I feel .it is all to much I think about how bad I was before treatment and how much more I can do now even on a less than perfect night. This keeps me at it. If I had no other conditions I would be even better.

Re: Very scared because I don't know what is going on
Do you have "Auto Off" enabled? If you do, I would disable it. That way the machine cannot possibly turn off unless it loses power or you turn it off with the button. At least if you check this you can eliminate it as a cause.

It is also possible that there is something wrong with the machine.
With SmartStart disabled..that would eliminate large leaks maybe causing the machine to turn off all by itself.

How do you do that? I checked my instructions and it mentions to do it, but not how.Pugsy wrote:It is also possible that there is something wrong with the machine.

In the clinical setup menu there is a feature called SmartStart which is essentially auto on feature...turns the machine on automatically when breathing is sensed. When it is turned on then that also means the auto off feature is turned on and in the event that a large leak happens the machine will turn itself off.
I have no idea what your leak situation might have been but in this situation it's best to simply remove any auto on or off features from the equation right now.
SmartStart is right under Sleep Quality in the Options menu

Re: Very scared because I don't know what is going on
Well, I'm not new to using CPAP and not that new to using this type of device specifically, and I haven't done this before, so I really don't understand why it is happening now.Sheriff Buford wrote:I agree with Julie... don't be scared or terrified... it is not all that unusual. I was so hoping you wouldn't be telling me that it was already off.fmj13 wrote:

Get in touch with your machine supplier tomorrow.
How long have you had this machine?
There's a problem...either with the writing of the data to the SD card or with the machine turning itself off inappropriately...both would be issues where the warranty should come into play.

Re: Very scared because I don't know what is going on
My machine was doing the same thing, had it replaced in July, worked fine. Last week the new machine started turning off again on me, I called Resmed asked if there was any know issues, said no, wanted to know if I wanted to talk to tech support, said sure. Fellow there started out treating me like a moron, I had the correct answer to all his questions, then he asked about the Climate line hose, which I had just switch out. Bingo, the hose looked fine only a few months old but was the reason for my machines start and stop. I think it was the reason for the replacement of my first machine too. Well I put that hose in the trash, put on a new one and have not had any trouble since. I'm evenly thinking of turning the smart start/stop back on! Give it a try, I really don't like sleeping in my FF mask for an hours with the machine off.
