Aliens visited again, UGLY night

Post by Pugsy » Fri Nov 01, 2013 7:47 am

I have posted about the alien visits in the past and I had a chance the other night to see their handy work again. Since we have a new group of newbies here now I thought I would share my reports because they are good examples of what happens when we blame the aliens. For the newbies who don't know...sometimes stuff happens during the night that is just down right ugly and we have no real idea what happened or why. My logical mind knows something changed but I don't know what and since the ugly nights are rare I really don't see the need to do a lot of searching trying to figure out what changed. It's just more fun to blame the aliens and move on..so that's what I do. It's also a good time to show newbies what I normally look at in the reports and I have included both Encore and SleepyHead reports to show how things are visually presented.

Bear in mind that my OSA is documented much worse in REM stage sleep. I have known that since day one. 5 times worse in REM stage sleep. Supine sleeping isn't a big factor for me. I have slept on my back all night (back when I broke my wrist and had surgery and couldn't get on my side) and had nice boring reports. Sometimes in REM I have some really stubborn events that are hard to prevent...I don't know why...it has always been that way and that's why I use auto adjusting pressures. I choose to let the machine try to prevent the events since I never know why or when they are going to occur. Sometimes my pressures never vary much and sometimes they go roaming all over the place. These pressure changes have never bothered me. I sleep right through them and never have any idea it happens until I happen to look at the report.

Here's the UGLY night. Big cluster of events..around 25 of them in a really short period of time. SleepyHead and Encore reports below. I will post a comparative "usual" "boring" night in a separate comment.

And here is a more typical night. Nice low AHI and pretty boring pressures. One little PB episode which is nothing to worry about.

My nightly routine didn't change on these 2 nights. Most of my nights look like this one here below. Ugly nights are a rare thing for me or if I have a little cluster of events it is usually just 3 or 4 events.

Aliens got into the leftover Halloween candy, didn't they?

Maybe. The dates were Tues the 29th (Ugly) and Wed the 30th (normal for me) nights. They must have found the hidden candy.
Actually where I live out in the country we have never had a trick or treater and I rarely keep candy here.

They visited me too Pugsy. I did nothing different last night except eat a heavier dinner than normal about 6 p.m. ( I hadn't eaten all day and had a small steak and salad for dinner) and I feel awful today. I remember waking up a lot because I felt like I couldn't breathe. Might have been the apneas or the centrals causing the feeling.

Looks like they left my house to come visit you. I haven't had a chance to look at my report from last night.
It may be a bit whacko. I took in a stray dog yesterday and the household is sort of in turmoil. The cat is pissed for sure and she let her displeasure be known last night. I hope her owners come looking for her today. She's a little Shitzu (sp?) and not a young dog and well groomed and well fed so I don't think it is a dump situation (sure hope not). No collar of course.
We had lots of rain and she got totally soaked and cold...so I took her in. Well mannered little thing.

OK, you caught me! I was under the bed and slipped out and squeezed the hose shut!

I was convinced that I would have an "ugly" night last night because when I was handing out chocolate bars to the trick and treaters, I (accidentally) ate about 8 . Oddly, I had a good night,..... maybe I should eat chocolate every night before I go to bed ...what do you think??????????
Cheers

Ghirardelli 60% bittersweet baking bits. Very small container only.
That's all I take, and have to carry it a ways from my hiding place.
(the other stuff is in the kitchen; and I might use them in brownies for the kiddies.)

I thought I saw you there. Paying me back for sneaking into your house and poking pin holes in your mask and hose...I assume.

I just now downloaded last night's data. The aliens came back. They must have had way too much fun the other night.
I don't normally download daily and only have been doing it lately because I am playing with Mark's new unstable builds in SleepyHead to help hunt for bugs. This report isn't from that build though and Encore confirms the ugliness.
So the night before the first ugly night was a night with nice low AHI...then the ugly night...then a nice low AHI night and then last night which was another ugly night..AHI even higher. I feel great today though. No different than I did yesterday after the nice low AHI night. Oh well...I will watch my reports a little closer to see if I am developing a new pattern. Can't think of anything that I might have done differently to account for this new clustering. Normally if it is the cat bouncing off the walls I get the expected CAs..not these OAs.

How about dreaming?? When I see that Mike sometimes tells me he had "crazy dreams"?

Oh, I have no doubt that those clusters are in REM stage sleep. I see it often...just not usually so many OAs popping up.
So I very well could have been dreaming but dreaming itself shouldn't affect airway patency.
I don't remember many of my dreams unless I have had a maybe restless night anyway with wake ups for some reason or another.
My point with these 2 particularly ugly nights...I didn't think I was restless or tossing or turning or any of the other usual stuff that I remember when I have a "bad" night. Some nights I know things were off kelter and a not so pretty report doesn't come as a big surprise.
These 2 ugly reports...I was totally surprised. I thought I had a great nights' sleep (for me anyway).
Minimal wake ups that I remember and felt great the next day...feel great today even with that AHI of 7 something last night.

I have read that we don't remember dreams much unless we happen to wake up during one. I think that holds true for me. The night's that I might remember a dream or multiple dreams are typically nights where I wake up often tossing and turning and often related to pain...like when I dream my back hurts so bad that I can't move and I wake up on my back and want to turn but it hurts SO bad that I don't want to. Or the time I dreamed I was having a baby (belly pains) and woke up with bad abdominal cramping.

Yes, of course, I should say that when Mike has one of those nights with "crazy dreams", he's also restless and leaking more and probably having arousals so he remembers those dreams.
