But I don't want to change my machine!

Post by Babette » Sat Oct 05, 2013 8:36 pm

I figured some of you old hands would appreciate this.

I decided 6 years on my M Series was long enough. Time to buy a new machine. Opted for the PR One. It came on Tuesday.

It's still in the box. I just don't WANT to set up a new machine!!!! Everything's all good and happy in my bedroom. It all works flawlessly. New machine means having to completely reconfigure the shelf it sits on, learn a new clinician's menu, set the damned thing, figure out this new fancy heated hose shebang and dammit, I really don't want to!

I need a house elf to do this for me. Taking applications.

LOL,
B.

About 4 years ago, they announced a major software/system change-over at work.
After 20 years with the same system, and related upgrades, I was so very comfortable--I was an expert.
I even learned how to write macros to get cool stuff done.
I actually considered retiring early to avoid this huge paradigm shift, (Crap, who does this at 62?)
But, I faced the monster down, and it wasn't even a tenth as bad as I expected.
The new system was so much more intuitive than the old.
Stepping out of my comfort zone can be addictive.
A month before my retirement, I wrote my first Power Point presentation.
I will never skydive, but pushing into new territory can be just about as exhilarating.

Intellectually I know you're right. I'm probably going to love this new machine. It's the getting it set up part that makes me tired just thinking about it.

You know you are six years wiser.
You have that much less to learn.
The rest can be taken one bite at a time.
Figure out what you need to do first, and proceed slowly.
Your old machine is working, so you don't have to rush it.

Excellent advice. I think the first step will be to do it EARLIER IN THE DAY so I don't feel rushed to get it all together by bedtime!

So... I'll think about it tomorrow. After all, tomorrow is another day! (she bats her eyelashes)

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I'm sticking with my Legacy machines. They were "state of the art" 6-8 years ago and they still treat me just fine. They're all data-capable, all the parts are interchangeable and I don't have to upgrade software, card readers or anything else. I made a conscious decision years ago to stick with them and have continued to do so. I have no regrets. AND, the last five I bought in the last three years were much cheaper than they were when they were new. Some of those "previously owned" machines were essentially "unused" when I got them.

I got one of my tanks from a friend who bought it for $25 at a thrift store. Very low hours. I'm thinking estate sales are a good place to shop for them...

Yeah, my M series is going strong still. I dunno. Maybe I'll just store this new one for awhile... Shoot, the Intellipap worked great right out of the box. I don't know why I'm being such a baby about this.

I think it's the heated hose thing that scares me. I never had a heated hose before. It seems... strange.

I still want a house elf.

And after coffee, I have found as I get older I can put off everything almost indefinitely. I try to wait until I feel better, that's not helping my job jar get empty. Jim

I hear ya on this one Babette. I am notorious for stalling on things that I just don't feel like dealing with yet. Fortunately you can do this whenever you do feel like it. But if you do find a house elf that travels, please send them my way when you're done with them. Somehow in the past few years I never did quite feel up to the challenge of figuring out my malfunctioning card reader or new oximeter setup. Keep thinking I should get rid of them but you never know, those elves may really exist. Let us know how it goes once you tackle it.

I would leave the machine in the box, but take out the owner's manual and read it at my leisure. Maybe, after reading about all the bells and whistles, that may encourage you to set it up. If not, leave it in the box until to have to use it. You just received a quality backup machine.

Best Wishes,

Sheriff

Babette,

I say leave it in the box. Tell you what, I'm going to do you a favor: kindly ship it to me, and I'll give it a good home.

Hey Iowamv, just looking at your avatar and wondering about your mask options...

Yeah, let's just say I love what my machine can do for me, but not what it does for my looks.

Am I the only person who deliberately tries to avoid seeing myself in mirrors with tape, chin strap and/or mask on my face?!

Hi Babette

Do you have an extra bedroom or a recliner? Set up the new machine there some morning and try it for a nap when you need one. I really love the heated hose - it keeps my headrest mask dry.

LOL I did the same thing. I got my new machine in late January and it sat on the floor for a month before I tried to turn it on and configure it. Because you know reading a manual and pushing a few buttons was so traumatic for a software developer.
