Colds

Post by lastlib » Thu Aug 22, 2013 8:28 pm

I have just ordered my first cpap machine. It is a F and P icon. I am very dubious about this. One of my concerns is when you get a cold how do you deal with the products that may come out of your moth when you cough or sneeze. This would seem to be particularly troublesome if you are coughing and sneeze a lot. (also known as a bad cold) Also I do not understand how you buy cpaps. I have just gone on medicare and I had to fax them my sleep study and prescription before I went to even look at machines. I do not fax walmart my clothing list and credit card before I go shopping. This seems to not be a service oriented business. I called every dealer in the phone book and got the same information from all of them.

When I have a bad cold, I have no choice except to go without CPAP, it just doesn't workout otherwise.
I have no idea what "It is a F and P icon." means.
When I got my machine, my doctor set me up with a supplier. I just went over there, gave them my insurance info, got instructions, and walked out with the machine.

Sorry! A Fisher and Paykal model named Icon. i have a plug shortage and it has an alarm clock that frees up the plug I use now for a bedside clock. I am a really old guy with a really old house with outdated electricity. I have the last coal fired laptop I think.

Most long-time users will advise you to try to keep using your CPAP through most colds. You'll probably get over them sooner. Some have better luck with more humidity and some have better luck with less. It's a personal preference thing.
It's also advisable to use a full face mask during a cold, too. In fact, most nasal mask users have a full face mask stashed away for those times.

When I have a bad cold, there are usually one or two nights when I'm too "gooey" to wear a mask but I sometimes hold the mask to my face just to get the warm, moist air between sneezes.

Lastlib,

You might want to make sure your Vitamin D dosage is optimal as that can be very helpful in preventing colds. I never had my level tested but since increasing dosage to 2000 to 3000IUs, I haven't gotten a cold in about 3 years.

I have only had one major cold since starting cpap 2-1/2 years ago, and I wore my full face mask through the whole thing. One night was terrible, lots of sneezing, taking off the mask to blow my nose and clean the inside of the mask, but as miserable as it was it was better than going without cpap. At least when I did sleep, I was able to breathe through my mouth with the full face mask and not worry about waking up gasping for breath from an apnea.

After taking loratadine every night for nasal allergies,
and using distilled water in my humidifier--
for the last 40 months;
my question is, "What is a cold? I think I have forgotten."

I have not had many colds since I started cpap about 12 years ago. The colds I have had were very mild. I had a full face mask for awhile. It leaked too badly to even use. I just wear my regular nasal pillows and put the humidifier heat up just a bit. Most of the year I use my humidifier in passive mode (water in the container but no heat).

I feel better when I get masked up and settled to sleep with a cold. I sleep my normal amount and with few or no disturbances during the night, in spite of the cold.
