Upgrading from crappy Escape to Elite on secondwind?

Post by Black Shampoo » Thu Jun 27, 2013 1:02 pm

I need to start monitoring my actual data instead of having no idea what's going on thanks to my Escape brick. There's a nice looking Gently Used ResMed S9 Elite CPAP with EPR on second wind right now. Since I"m paying out of pocket on this, does it make sense to upgrade to that to start looking at data? It's only $370. It looks like it's compatible with my existing humidifier too.

Is there any reason to try to get an autoset instead if I have no issues with compliance and am only at 8cm?

Ofcourse, go for the S9 Elite!

How much will you be paying for the S9 Autoset? If it's below $500 and you have a dehumidifier for it then I would go for it. Regardless the pressure

The S9 Elite is a big step up from the S9 Escape. As you know, you'll be able to see full efficacy data and make pressure changes
in response to that data. The AutoSet has the advantage of adjusting pressures throughout the night. This is especially
helpful for people who need higher pressures for part of the night, and lower ones for the balance of the time.

And yes, the S9 humidifier you own is compatible with the S9 Elite.

I guess that's what I was wondering - is Autoset always an upgrade from continuous? Or just for people that need super high pressures?

The Autoset is about $100 more.

Higher pressure would require a "bilevel" machine. All S9 series use the same humidifier.
I was originally sold an Elite, but since I wanted to lose weight, I reckoned the Autoset
would help eliminate redundant sleep studies.

The AutoSet is not just for high pressure. It will automatically make pressure adjustments as your needs change over time, subject
to the limitations of your min and max pressure settings. With the Elite, you'll need to keep a closer look at your data and make
needed pressure adjustments manually.

, Ah, that's interesting. It sounds like the Autoset is inherently better, then, since it would likely adjust the pressure for variables like nasal congestion, sleeping position, etc. that might affect the needed pressure.

I went ahead and ordered the Auto, since it does everything the Elite does and more. I can always use it "just" as an Elite, but I can experiment with the autoset if I need to. That's worth the extra $$ to me.

As long as it doesn't put you into a financial bind, I don't think you'll regret it.

Actually...the Escape does exactly the same thing as the Elite...except for showing the data. The therapy you get from the Escape will be the same as the Elite. If you can afford it, definitely go for the Elite or Autoset, but, realize that the Escape is used by lots of people who don't care to monitor their data.

You'll be very happy with the Autoset.

Love the autoset. Makes diagnosing issues / pressure needs easier.
