Need solutions for itching underneath mask

Post by porete » Tue Apr 23, 2013 1:45 pm

My Dad is having a difficult time with his nose and face itching when he has his mask on. His face does not itch where the mask touches his face, just the area that is covered by the mask. I have not had much of a problem with this myself, so I am not sure what to do to help him be more comfortable. I did get him to try a mask liner (Remzzzs), but it made his FFM leak around his eyes.
His machine: PRS1 AUTO 560P with heated tubing and humidifier, Pressure: 7.5-16, EPR-3
Mask: Quattro FX ( medium)

I have this problem sometimes with my full face mask and what I do is think about something else and concentrate on what I'm thinking about and it usually goes away. I know that sounds weird but it works for me 95% of the time. The other 5% I have to remove my mask and scratch.

Squid & I are U.S. Navy guys.... we were taught to stand at attention and ignore itches.. That way you avoided getting nabbed for moving while in formation with your company during inspections.

I still try to the same thing and think about something else, but when the itch is really annoying, I just undo one of the clips, lift the mask and scratch the area... when I'm satisfied, I put the mask back on..

yes, there will be large leaks on my graph the following day, but I know why.

My Dad is also a U.S. Navy guy, and I hope he can get to where he can ignore his itches, also.

Q-tips work pretty good and don't mess with the seal too bad. They could be longer for those hard to reach itches, though.

I use an unscented baby wipe on the itch, rub vigorously, and anywhere else that might "holler" later on.
It also helps if I wipe down before masking up, just as a preventative.

My nightly routine includes rubbing my nose area (the part that gets covered by the mask) somewhat vigorously before masking up. It's always worked (at least 99.99999% of the time) for me.

Thank you for all the suggestions! My Dad really likes the idea of using a q-tip to neutralize the itchy spot. I will tell him about the suggestion that he rub his face vigorously before he masks up and see if that will help also.

I have learned to ignore most of my itches. But I can tell if an itch is coming on that can't be ignored. I keep an unsharpened pencil at my bedside. For an itch, I turn the machine off, unhook the hose and stick the pencil in the hose-hole... and start scratchin'. A pencil is long enough (and sturdy) to get the job done.

I am happy that we-guys can get away with scratchin' the itch, no matter where it's at. I guess it's a "guy-thang"....
