Newbie saying hello.

Post by dozyboy2002 » Mon Apr 22, 2013 1:16 pm

Hi my name is Jeff. 55 yr old male from Wi. Sleep study results in late February, showed that I have severe OSA with a score of 40.3. I started my cpap use on March 18. First month results were confirmed with a doctor appointment last Friday. My average AHI score for the month using cpap dropped from 40.3 at sleep study, to 2.3 for the first month of use. I was and still am able to use the machine without problems. I seem to have adapted very well. My doctor was very happy with the results. Only problems I continue to have are nighttime bathroom visits. Usually one at 3am. Some nights I may have 2 or 3 visits. This is disappointing to me. I was hoping to rid myself of this issue and sleep all night. Maybe I expect too much? I also suffer from ED, although I think this may be showing some improvement. I have read some have improvement in 30 days. I have not. I am keeping a positive attitude. Two things have gone away which I am happy about. No more severe headaches when I awake, and no more midday drowsiness. Thanks for letting me in the group, and I hope to learn much from the group.

Welcome to the forum.

Is there a chance that you have selected the wrong equipment in you profile.
Your machine and humidifier don't match and the machine you have chosen doesn't offer AHI data so if you are seeing a reduction in AHI on your reports it can't be with your machine.

Let's figure out exactly which machine you have and get you pointed to some software so you can see for yourself if you want to.

Look on the bottom of the blower unit for a sticker with a 3 digit number on it. Maybe will have DS or REF in front of it. Tell us that 3 digit number. Also on the same sticker is an 8 digit number which will likely start with 2012 or 2013...This is the date of manufacture in year/month/date format.

Also...does your long hose from the humidifier have a black end on it?

Those killer morning headaches are such a relief to get rid of. Those headaches and the absence of nocturia were the first signs that I had that my therapy was working.

That is very possible. I am at work. I will check my equipment notice and fix that in the morning. The machine I have uses a wireless modem to my doctor. The results are accurate, i have them with me at this time. My hose is all one color, no black end. Thanks for the reply.

Welcome dozy!

I just started cpap about a week after you. If you can get your equipment confirmed and post some data here, I guarantee this crew can figure out any issues you're encountering. Do you cut back on fluid intake a couple hours before bed?

My nighttime bathroom visits went from 3-4 before cpap to 0-1 after cpap. Once it has been determined that your therapy is successful by looking at your data, you can consult with your urologist to determine whether your nocturia is unrelated to OSA.

One bathroom visit per night would not be considered abnormal.

Ok, I have updated my equipment. The machine info did not transfer from my profile. The machine is a REMstar Pro C-Flex+. The REF# is 460P. Build date is 20121114. Sorry but I have no clue as to any software. The unit has a Phillips Respironics modem to send info to doctors office. Hope this helps. Thanks.

Does it have an SD Card in the back that you can eject to download your data into SleepyHead software?

Okay, the model # 460 is in the drop down equipment menu.
It is called the
PR System One 60 Series Pro CPAP Machine
So look in the PR System One grouping to find it. If you find it and it still won't show up in your profile just add it manually in the comments section. Some of the links to equipment machines appear to be broken.

That model has a heated hose option. If your long hose has a black end where it attaches to the humidifier then you have the heated hose option...and the humidifier equipment choice is
PR System One 60 series Heated tube humidifier with heated tube. This choice in the equipment menu isn't critical.
The heated hose is an option so since your hose doesn't have a black end on it...you don't have that option. If you start experiencing rain out (condensation in the mask or hose) you might want to think about trying to add that option. It will help a lot. Not everyone has the problem with rain out though...so just something to think about. Normally rain out is mainly a wintertime issue.

The model 460 is a full data machine and you have 2 choices for software.
SleepyHead was written by a forum member and will work with the 60 series machines but you will need a special Patch file to make it compatible.
I have links for the basic SleepyHead download and information in my signature line.
Here is the thread where we talked about the the Patch file and instructions on how to replace the old application exe file with the new Patch application exe file
viewtopic/t83551/SleepyHead-Series-60-Patch-Avail.html

There may or may not be a SD card in the SD slot under the modem. You can easily pop the modem off to check if you want to. If no SD card you can use any SD card. If you remove the modem briefly to use SleepyHead software to see your results it won't hurt anything. No one will ever know unless you tell them.

There is another software that you can use put out by Respironics. SleepyHead is really superior but if you can't get it working and/or want to try the Encore software just send me a private message and I will get you some additional information on how to find it. This would be the software that the DME or doctor is using.
EncoreGuide link this will show you examples of what you will see. For a different machine than yours but the basics are the same.
http://www.healthcare.philips.com/pwc_h ... _Guide.pdf

Sounds like you are doing very well and you may or may not feel the need to look at your software data but if you stick around here on the forum you will see us talking about it...so I just wanted to let you know what was available to you.
It's there to try now or later...whatever you want to do.

The slot where the SD card goes is under the modem..so you won't see it unless you remove the modem. If you need pictures I will see if I can find some.

Ok Pugsy, thank you. I will wait to see if the doc wants modem removed next month. As it is, doc made copies for me of first months results. That is how I was made aware of my AHI scores for first month use.

Once the compliance hours of use are met to satisfy any insurance need or doctors needs they will likely remove the modem.
Since you are doing well there is no real urgent need to do the software thing. Just wanted to explain the options to you.

Dozy,
You and I started therapy on the same day. Just last week I noticed I was no longer making my usual three bathroom visits each night. In fact, I did a posting about it here. Now, I NEVER get up to go visit the bathroom. I suspect you will eventually have similar results. (You did not say...are you diabetic?)
While you certainly do not HAVE to have a removable SD card in your machine, Pugsy is trying to lead you in the right direction. Rather than wait for the doc to tell you what the last MONTH looked like, with the card you can do what each of us does: look every morning at how last night was.
Seeing lowering numbers can really give you the desire to push through some of the tougher issues like mask fit, etc. Eventually, all becomes well and I hear members say they seldom even look any more.
I still look and get quite excited when I have a night, like last night, where my AHI was 0.2

Hang in there, I bet the bathroom visits start getting less frequent. There seem to be a lot of pluses to cPAP therapy. Most recently, (just in the last few days) I've started noticing my blood pressure running quite low. I'm thinking as a result of the cPAP, my doctor may now need to lower by hypertension meds. Now.. if I can shed 50 pounds, I'll be a truly happy camper.
Pugsy is amazing in her knowledge. I often wish I could just have a three-hour chat with her over coffee. Any problem you have...bring it to the feet of Pugsy. You will always be in good hands.

Thanks Jim. I appreciate the info. No to the diabetic issue. After my second doctor visit next month, I hope to switch to a card. We will see what doctor says. Other than the bathroom visits, I have been happy with the results.
Alert all day, and no more killer morning headaches. I am keeping a positive attitude going forward. My AHI went from 40.3 to an average the first month of 2.3,. Quite a few nights at 1.5,. So It is working. I could also stand to drop that 50lbs. Hope cpap give me the energy to do so.

Jeff.
