Neti pots

Post by Tigerlily » Sun Apr 21, 2013 11:31 pm

I have one and try to do nasal cleansing before bed more regularly than I used to, I just started, but thought I would try a few times a week.

Just wondering how many others do nasal washes regularly? How often?

And most important.....can you overdo it

I do the nasal wash on a fairly regular basis. From what my doc says you could over do it but it would be hard to do. He recommended 2 or 3 times a day but I generally only do it once a day except during the middle of allergy season. I do use the NeilMed squeeze bottle rather than the Neti Pot. I guess I like the pressure control and it takes less time. I seem to remember he told me to allow at least an hour after using it before I went to bed.

I just started to use the net potty. It has been great. My wife and I had a discussion and her chiropractor (Jiro- practor) told her that in some patients, the wash has forced some mucus way... up into the nasal cavity and that has caused some issues. But at the same time the doctor says it's a very good product. I have found it helpful. I wish I would use it more and make it more a part of my routine... Sheriff

I have never used a neti pot. The idea scares the heebie jeebies out of me.
Don't laugh...the queen of experimentation is put off by the idea of pouring water up my nose. Ain't going to happen.

I do make frequent ample use of a simple saline type nasal spray though.
I am lucky...all those allergy shots I took 30 years ago are still holding. Minimal seasonal allergy symptoms.
I use the spray to reinforce hydration. I have learned that nasal mucosa dryness is my number one enemy. If I keep the nasal mucosa nicely hydrated...they don't swell up and cause congestion. If they are happy then I can breathe easily through my nose and I am happy.

Funny thing...I always breathe so much better in the AM after a night of nicely humidified air going up my nose. If I have any little congestion at bedtime...the humidified air of the cpap machine totally clears it up.

I never used the neti pot.

I started off using the Nasaline irrigator ...

Then graduated to the Grossan Hydro Pulse ...

For a while I used it religiously every day. Then went to once a week and now just when ever I feel the need for it.

Cool thing is after I started using CPAP back in mid-2006, I have not had a single sinus or upper respiratory infection.

Don't know if it is due to 100% CPAP compliance, the nasal irrigation, or that I stopped taking the flu shot but I used to have a sinus infection, cold, or flu like every other month before then and now not at all.

Yes -- I have used the squeeze bottle system from Walgreens. Seems to work OK. Not a miracle but OK and I had an ENT recommend it to me once.

BUT you really need to be careful re the water used. Technically you should use bottled or boiled water because last year there were reports of people getting a fatal brain infection from an amoeba in municipal tap water used in a neti pot. Google it for more info. Depends on where the state is and how the municipality gets its water. The warmer the water is outside, the higher the danger of the amoeba being present.....

My former allergist is quoted in this article as being against nasal rinsing long term because he feels the good bacteria is wiped out addition to the bad stuff. But as you can see, his opinion seems to be in the minority.

http://health.usnews.com/health-news/fa ... -than-good.

The only one I have had experience with is the Grossan Hydro Pulse. Every time I used it, I would get relief for about 30 minutes before getting a rebound effect of feeling stuffy again.

But perhaps, I haven't didn't do enough to open passages before trying it. Unfortunately, I seem not to have much luck with many remedies (prescription and OTC) and feel better when I don't use anything. However, I do fear once the weather warms up again, I may need to revisit this whole issue since it seems my right nasal passage which is narrower gets stuffed up quite easily.

and maybe 2-3x/week the rest of the year.

I use the neti pot morning and night. Together wit the moisture of the machine keeps the nose open most of the year. Only fails when I have a cold.

3 or 4 people a year in the US are diagnosed as having died from Naegleria fowleri. There have only been 3 or 4 of these in the past 10 years who were neti users using tap water.

I use the Sinus Rinse.

Realize that the goo in your nose is there for a reason. Overdoing the rinsing will probably reduce its protective effect.

I use the neti pot for certain occasions. For instance, during the peak of allergy season, or if I feel a cold coming on, or if I've been working in a dusty environment. I've found it to be extremely helpful in those situations. I know several people who use it daily just as a matter of course, and they swear by the benefits. Keep in mind to always use distilled water in the process, and keep your neti pot and associated containers clean.

I use the Sinus Rinse squirt up the nose bottle when I get a crusty up there. I don't use it often tho, but when I do: filtered Brita water and nuke it to luke warm
