Pillow for your head

Post by TieDye Dave » Wed Jan 02, 2013 10:20 am

After another irritating night with mask I have come to conclusion that a cpap pillow may be necessary. I am a mouth breather and mostly side sleeper the leaks created from tossing or turning need to end. Has anyone used a "cpap" pillow with the cutouts on the sides? Do they work? are they firm? just want an idea before spending money for something that can end up "in the spare parts drawer"

I am also a side sleeper (most of the time) who also spends some time on my back.

I sleep with a down pillow (a REAL FEATHERS) and can shape it easily for both comfort and my Quatro FFM. It's worked well for me so far. I am new to xPAP on a APAP unit, 2 weeks total so far.

If on is allergic to down, a cpap pillow might be a good option. I have slept only on down pillows for a long long time, long before I ever heard of xPAP.

Any pillow will do if it works -for you; some like the cut-out pillows,
others like the sobakawa bead or buckwheat pillows.
I use a contour memory foam pillow (not a cpap pillow),
and may switch back to a soft fiberfill regular bed pillow.

I have the Contour cpap pillow. It cost around $40 and I like it. But I might be the only one on this board that likes it. Everyone else seems to hate it

You can make your own pillow with cutouts. Don't make your own foam one though. The foam will shed from the cutout part.

I did that--cut a butterfly shape out of a block of foam, then stick in a zippered pillowcase.
All that work, and I didn't really like it much.
I even bought an awesome foam knife. $$ (they saw me coming)

I find a thick poly (regular) pillow works for me. I sleep on my side and it keeps my neck in alignment. My physical therapist recommended a temperpedic pillow but I found them just too hard.

I'v been using one for 8 months. It's the CPAP pillow made of firm memory foam and has the scooped out cut out's on each side. I'm also a side sleeper/mouth breather using a Mirage Quatro mask. The CPAP pillow works great for me and I'm a finicky pillow user. I've never used the same pillow for this long but it was comfortable to begin with and has retained it's shape and firmness.

I love it!. I'm a mouth breather and side sleeper, and it's a game changer for me anyway.
I tried about a dozen different pillows and finally broke down and got one on Ebay.
I got this one....

I've tried them all and the best pillow I found was the Regenisis Buckwheat Hull pillow. It's firm so you stay on top and don't sink in. The pillow can be shaped to fit your head/neck. http://www.pur-sleep.com

I also have the contour memory foam pillow with cut outs. I use a big (gas mask-type) mask, and I love to sleep on my side. The pillow works great for me, but it is a memory foam pillow. It is fairly hard. I also use the Temperpedic mattress. It is also very firm but I love it so much, I am very uncomfortable in sleeping on a conventional mattress.

You could tie your pillow back with some old ties. Can't believe someone would have the nerve to sell the strap below for $25. Not going to even link the name of the product.

Or get yourself a large safety pin and pin the edges back. Don't know if it will actually work though.

I've tried every pillow imaginable. My square D pillow was wearing out, & I could not find another.

I tried the Sobakawa Pillow & loved it! I went to Bed Bath & Beyond since I could not find the Queen/King anywhere. They ordered it for me, delivered to my house & arrived in a couple of days.

The Queen/King is not as big as I expected it to be, but works just right for me, when I'm on my side, the pillow adjusts, on my back, works great too. I've not had much luck with stomach sleeping since CPAP, but I think it might work if you can sleep on your stomach. Key to this pillow is the inner 'beads' move wherever you put them. Shake, smooth, punch, any which way & it conforms to what you need.

Now I'm sounding like a commerical. Sorry, but I do love this pillow.
Jen

I bought an $80 cpap pillow that is totally useless- what works great is the cheapo sobakawa(sp?) pillow -they sell it at Bed, Bath and Beyond - that is full of tiny beads - you can mold it into whatever shape you want to support the mask but not put pressure on it - I've got the small one although if i had to do it over again, I'd get the big one

I started out with a standard queen sized foam pillow that I had been using prior to CPAP, but it was too soft and pushed up on my Quattro FFM when I laid on it.

I've been using the regular sized PAPillow sold by our sponsors for about 3 months now. It was great for a while, but now the "wings" pop up whenever I put my head in the middle of it and they press on my Quattro FFM.

A contour multi-mask pillow is on it's way to me from Amazon this week.

I guess finding the right pillow is as much trial and error as it is for finding the right CPAP mask.

1 each firm cheap pillow... $5

A good night's rest on my tummy... priceless

Cinch and tie the tie around the pillow about 2/3rds of the way down.

Works for me! Cheap solution that might work for you too...
