Stupid or sadistic devices to stop mouth breathing

Post by VikingGnome » Wed Dec 05, 2012 5:22 pm

Browsing Amazon I found 2 pretty stupid/sadistic devices to keep your mouth closed during sleep.

This looks SADISTIC. Buyers have posted that the elastic around the ears are a killer. Never fell asleep so don't know if it works.

Next, I call STUPID. There's no way this flap of silicone is going to stay on.

Are you sure you weren't browsing in the kink and bondage section?

Ha, ha... you tryin' to get us hot and bothered? The only device you you missed was the classic 'ball gag'. Hey, don't look at me... I didn't invent the ball gag, and I'm certainly not going to give you a URL link to any places that sell them! Just make sure your virus checker is up to date if you go looking for one on the web. Question: On the top pic, where do the two lower straps (wires?) go to???

I like my ResMed AirFit F10 FFM - reasonably low leaks for my ASV therapy. I'm currently using a PR S1 AutoSV 960P Advanced. I also keep a ResMed S9 Adapt as backup. I use a heated Hibernite hose. Still rockin' with Win 7 by using GWX to stop Win 10.

The lower straps are just to tighten up the contraption. Wonder why they call it "Consuming Model"?

What a hilarious thread! I have to ask, do these devices really look less freaky -- or kinky for that matter -- than going to bed with the mouth taped shut?
Heck, it's probably a little safer than taping but it looks like the strap over the upper lip might not work with a nasal or nasal pillow mask.

p.s. SNO, curiosity got the best of me, naive soul that I am, and I looked up your "suggestion" on Amazon -- they actually sell this toy -- er, I mean device on Amazon. But the problem is the ball has holes in it and the product is advertised as "breathable." Too bad -- we might have been able to resurrect that old "sex on cpap" thread with some further tips on how to enrich your relationship and your CPAP therapy at the same time.

Oh man, I was thinking of starting a thread about how glamorous we all are with our ever increasing head gear. I think the top one wins though.

This device seems predicated on the fact that one must have pouty protruding 'model's lips' to keep things positioned. I've just got standard issue men's lips, sorta flat and not at all pouty. Those upper and lower pads would end up in my mouth in no time! Plus, that seems like a lot of pressure to exert on the backs of one's ears. My ears get sore just from wearing my glasses.

If you are going to do this second one you might as well buy a hybrid!

I'm actually going to try the first one. Call me crazy, but it looks like it might work for me, I keep mouthbreathing thru the tightest chinstrap.

jencat, I'm laughing so hard right now -- because I did the very same thing last night! I was just not going to 'confess' that I ordered one ! I don't have those plump lips of youth anymore for the straps to grab on to, but I'm not sure if that's totally necessary for the thing to work. We'll see. It's a fairly cheap experiment and if it did work that would eliminate the need for taping and chin straps -- to me that makes it definitely worth a try. I still have my Padacheek bella loop covers I can put over the part that goes behind the ears (one Amazon reviewer complained about soreness there).

Maybe we'll become trendsetters! But we likely won't be posting photos!
