Wierd air feeling coming from hose?

Post by jjlady » Thu Aug 09, 2012 10:36 am

Last night the air on the inhale felt wierd, I am not sure how to describe it.....felt lie a bubble, or it was going over a bump, not sure what else to say about it? It felt like it was right at the intersection of where the air comes into the mask.

This didn't happen alot maybe 6-10 times, each one was very fast. Also it didn't happen right away, after quite a few hours on the mask. Once I noticed it I couldn't sleep because I kept waiting for it to happen. Between that and a horrible leg cramp I just threw the mask off and slept 2 hours without it.

I also tried a pad a cheek anti leak strap last night for the first time but I can't see how that would affect the air inside or how it comes from the hose to the mask, I made sure the strap was over the intake thing like they said to do (and just like the picture on there site). I even checked the hose to see if there were any kinks or bends and there wasn't any.

Has anybody had this before??

I'm very new to all this but it sounds like you're talking about a normal pulse coming from your machine. I'm not exactly sure what these pulses are for but mine does it from time to time as well.

I have had that pulse, the pulse is sort of like the mask breathing or going up and down a bit, this was more concentrated like a ball of air bouncing around in a small area right as it enters the mask.

I can think of two things that might be like you describe: 1) the flapper valve in the elbow coming into the mask was flipper-flapping a bit. Might happen at lower pressures. 2) I don't have a PR system, but a ResMed S9 AutoSet and I can feel the predictive aspect of flow coming from the machine, that is, it seems the machine prepares airflow in anticipation of the next inhale and so sometimes I feel that little push, particularly if I slow my breathing.

Or 3), ALIENS !

It is just like me to have an unexplainable thing happen, nothing in my life is "normal".

One must surrender normalcy to be special Those we honor with greatness were abnormal, by definition. Carry on!

What's your starting pressure? Down low like 4-6 cm H2O?

It is fixed at 15 but I ramp from 4 for 30 minutes. Maybe when I put the anti leak strap over the hole and up against the mask something got moved out of position, but it only started happening at least 2 hours (guessing) into my sleep or trying to sleep. It kind of felt like as the air came into the mask it tumbled around or formed a ball and I inhaled it...I know that sounds wierd but that is the best way I can describe it!!

I'm guessing it has something to do with that flapper valve. If you block the output of that valve, it may not want to properly "slap shut". It's the differential pressure, 4 cm vs. bedroom pressure that keeps it shut, and 4 cm is not a lot of "umpfh" so maybe it's moving in there a bit giving you the sensation. At 2 hours (guessing) into your sleep your breathing may be subdued enough that it somehow it's getting rather a bit "flippy flappy" (technical term )

That sounds like a possibility, also to be candid, yesterday I was very anxious so I took about 3/4 of an ativan to try and relax (I rarely do this, maybe 3x a year), so maybe my breathing was off (although I took it early at 530pm).

Just to be clear, your mask doesn't look like this right?

I came home and looked at my data....interesting, periodic breathing last night was 14% while the other nites/ or last week was 3%. Not sure exactly what that means but I bet it has something to do with that...and I bet the ativan caused the periodic breathing as I heard it can affect respiration. Although I took the ativan at least 7 hrs prior.

Ativan half-life is 9–16 hours (source: wiki). That means that dose you took 7 hrs earlier... more than half of it was still swirling about your system. If we take the 9 hrs half-life, after 18 hrs a quarter of that dose is still swirling about.

My math isn't good, but I think that means it is still in my system now and will be tonight. No wonder I was tired all day today!

The amount in your body goes in half every 9-16 hrs. So, if you take some at 10 PM, half of it is swirling about at 7 AM. One quarter of it is swirling around at 4 PM the next day.
