Check out what I received in exchange for a new pillow!!!

Post by jonnybee » Fri Nov 25, 2011 4:04 pm

Had two new Swift FX pillows to trade, a medium and a large. The pillow on the left, obviously a new one, came from a lady member who wanted the medium. The pillow on the right, came from a male member (can't refer to him as a "gentleman") who wanted the large. As well as being very discolored, the nasal pillows on the set on the right are soft and squishy.

Just a suggestion: If this was through pillow trade thread on this forum,
please report abuse to forum administrator--including name of offender.
No one wants to see that happen.

It was indeed a trade through the pillow trade thread here and the person is a frequent poster. I have no intention of identifying him here, but I do want him to see what members think.

Is the yellowing due to smoking? No matter, that was not fit to be traded...

I would not suggest you 'out' the perp. to all of us; but please let forum administrator know.
I would not want what's his name allowed to trade more NASTY pillows.

I won't comment on the soft and squishy part but I had a nasal pillow discolor like that and it was never used.
First Swift FX mask I got from the DME. Only one he had at the time was an opened but unused Demo mask with the Medium pillow attached. He just gave the mask to me since it was opened but the Medium was already obviously a bit yellowed from being out in the air and over next 6 months it discolored considerably and I never used it since I use XS or Small. I didn't think to seal it back in a baggy. I still have it. Looks awful but it was never used....it isn't soft and squishy though. So the silicone will discolor if left out in the air for prolonged period of time.

Common courtesy should have been for the owner to at least alert you to the discoloration.

YUCK - Looks like nicotine inhaled.

I have my Swift LT pillows out in the air and they have never discolored.

Post nasal drip may have caused the squishy breakdown.

Sleep therapy changed my life for the better, never knew how bad it was before I got hooked to "the machine".

I'm outing myself here because I have to.(for my own sanity)

I sent that pillow to jonnybee.

It was in the drawer where I keep all kinds of spare parts and pieces and I discovered it as I was straightening out the drawer. Still in its package, unused and unopened.
I didn't notice the off color because all of the silicone in that drawer is the same color. For as long as I have been a cpap'er I never knew the silicone would deteriorate like that. In my mind, it was new and unused and without any "fresh" silicone to compare it to, it looked fine.

I didn't notice the change in feel (soft and squishy) because I didn't take it out of the package and manhandle it.

This is a clean, non-smoking household, and contrary to one post, that pillow has not been exposed to post nasal drip. The rush to judgment by some was interesting however.

I have contacted jonnybee and offered a replacement of a brand new pillow purchased from cpap.com along with my sincerest apologies. I was, upon seeing the comparison photo, truly embarrassed ... at my own ignorance because I didn't notice that change.

With that being said, I wonder now how to "store" silicone parts and pieces. I've gone through that drawer again and all of the silicone stuff I was keeping "in case I might need it" is apparently all discolored and probably no good. Or is there no practical way to store it and you just have to live with the shelf life?

I find it admirable that you decided to explain here publicly, YB. I wonder if being kept in a wooden drawer could be causing the deterioration of the silicone....just a thought. I have a number of "tried-n-failed" masks in a plastic sealed tub in a closet, and none of them appear to be discolored or softened by comparison with my newest spare mask cushion.

Yeah, I'm wondering if the dresser is off-gassing enough to accelerate or exacerbate the deterioration. It's a fairly new bedroom set and I can still smell the "newness" when I open a drawer. I obviously have to find a different storage method. I may actually try glass containers for small parts as I also now wonder if the polypropylene and polyethylene used in plastic bags and containers has an effect on the silicone.

Meanwhile I've managed to anger jonnybee (and he's perfectly justified in being upset) and embarrass myself at the same time. Lesson learned.

I did not know it was in a sealed package.... sorry to have rushed to judgment. your explanation sounds logical to me. thanks for explaining.. once again, my apology.
