CPAP Heretics

Post by archangle » Thu Sep 01, 2011 2:33 pm

I was watching a TV show last night called "Secrets of the Dead - Battle for the Bible."

It was about people translating the bible from the church approved Latin "priests only" version to a common English version for the common man to read.

The church responded by burning the translators at the stake. Including digging one of them up from the grave and burning him.

I was struck by the similarity of the medical community's reaction to patients knowing how to change their own CPAP machine settings.

So be careful, you CPAP heretics. The Cpope is going to track you down and burn you at the stake!

OMG... I probably will be burned at the stake.. One person already thinks I am bad news and once the cpap police figure out I know something about the software, I am sure they will be at my door.

So you’re suggesting that sleep doctors and techs are the “Catholic Church”, and “we” cpap users are analogous to Wycliffe or Tyndale?

Hmmm….

…..interesting

Then the Inquisitors ran the DME.

They had to burn heretics before they could confiscate their worldly goods to the 3rd generation. So they unearthed the heretic, burned them and then took everything away from the surviving family members. They would continue to harass and tax until the grandchildren died. If you were family members you were well and truly abused because you couldn't move away; run away or change jobs.

And yet [our machine pressure] moves.

It would be nice to have vulgate versions of the clinician manuals.

ROFL, jnk

The official word is "When in Rome, do as the DME's do (or say)"

On a serious note, and after noting that it only took me a few weeks after getting my first CPAP to dig out the procedure to change its settings (not that easy in 2003!), and after helping and encouraging other people to do it, and chastising the medical community for not wanting us to be in control of our own health, I need to touch on one of the main reasons why they do that: liability. I'm all for patients being in full charge of their treatment, but some people would also jump on the first opportunity to sue their doctors if something were to happen to them. Responsibility goes hand-in-hand with freedom, so whoever wants the latter must be ready to take on the former. Until that is the case, I'm afraid, the medical community will keep trying to defend themselves with all means at their disposition, thus, making our life harder.
