Requests for website features?

Post by Sireneh » Tue May 31, 2011 12:12 pm

Where would one submit requests for additions or changes to this site?

I hate to throw cold water on your good ideas, but the owners of this site are going for low maintenance. If you see a serious problem, however, perhaps you can send a note to one of the site admins. Unless it is a request for topic categories, you may wish to discuss it here or see if it has already been discussed.

I was more thinking along the lines of, for one, being able to preview a portion of a post by hovering your mouse over the subject line, thus enabling one to decide whether the post is something of interest or not, making perusing the site more efficient. I had one or two other thoughts but they have escaped me just now.

One wouldn't, instead they would start their own site, and ,make it any way they want. this site doesn't need changes, it just needs people that can read the info provided and people willing to share what they have learned freely. Jim

The post title usually gives you a idea what the post is about, also by spending time here, you can see who posts what and decide who's posts follow what you are looking for.

You are not alone thinking these things.........many new posters (and some more senior posters) contemplate possible changes from time to time.......but it's not the way of this board.

Also, you can left click on the "replies" to have a pop up window open and tell you who and many times a person responded to a particular post.

The responses you rec'd are excellent........you soon learn who to click on, who to avoid or ignore, and how to use the foe feature when you need to......

What about a mouse-over of equipment images that yield a text label or description.

Wow, really? Nice welcome. An "announcement" may be nice then so many wouldn't ask. You'd think something that comes up countless times has validity but no, take your progressive ideas out of here and don't bother me. I actually registered thinking part of the forum (sections) were hidden from unregistered users. Disappointing.

I'm thinking that has been mentioned in one of the threads listed above, but my brain didn't retain it. Maybe now that I actually went and did it I'll retain it. Maybe. How long have I been here? Five years. Hmmmm

Sireneh, sometimes ideas come across that are good, or at least good for the tastes of some. Many probably have a "wish list" if the site is ever revamped. But for the foreseeable future it's probably WYSIWYG. Never hurts to send ideas to the admins. Maybe they keep a file for future reference.

We try to get everyone to list their equiptment, for that very reason. People that are trying to help you need to know what equiptment you are using. a picture may be cutsie, but it doesn't really show what you are using, many things look alike, and even some that do show equiptment don't know what equiptment they are really using. so instead of a mouseover, please ban "ICONNY" in the first place. Well, my post was not intended as a criticism of the site. I mean, it's FINE, it's just that I would've thought there'd be a communal "wish list" the admins might keep, and I wanted to submit my suggestions to be considered or ignored. It's not as if I think the site should be changed according to my preferences, just wanted a place to add my input. I used to work with developers and I suppose that spoiled me somewhat.

Not to stir the pot, but Sireneh, a newbie just like me, just asked a question about submitting a request.

I've been reading this site for a few months now and, at first, thought it a great place for information, help and advice and I've received all three. But while the information may be here, after reading several of these types of responses, I was VERY judicious in what I asked and, to tell the truth, I'd be hard pressed to ask for help in the future. For instance, how would anyone know that this site is stagnant as far as modifications/improvements are concerned? There was no reason for Sireneh to be addressed so harshly.

This OSA thing is a difficult thing to get used to. It might be a good reminder to recall what it was like when you first came to this place. We're tired. We're scared. We're getting used to our equipment and speaking this new language. We newcomers aren't running on all cylinders yet and certainly can't know what's in the mind of the administrators of this board.

Didn't you say in your previous post in answer to Sireneh's question about a potential change to the board, "One wouldn't, instead they would start their own site, and ,make it any way they want. this site doesn't need changes, it just needs people that can read the info provided and people willing to share what they have learned freely. Jim"

Then you wrote in answer to mairtin's post:

Jim
By requesting a ban on "ICONNY," isn't your post also a request for a change to the site?

Uhm. Double standard?

If you want to find out what the icon is, just right click on it, "open link in new tab" and then look at the page that opens in the new tab. Or same thing with "new window." You don't lose your place in the original post.
