A few of our favorite things

Post by napstress » Thu May 26, 2011 8:29 am

I'm wondering what people have experienced as a happy result of CPAP use, whether they have experienced the wonders of restedness or not. A few things have been helping me continue with the struggle of CPAP use, even though I've only had that one, happy day of feeling not-tired behind my eyes and with a cool, clear head, which was two weeks ago. I thought I'd post one a day, to draw out the five or so I have experienced so far and to keep my spirits up. Here's today's:

I don't get congested at night anymore.

Have a nice day and a sweet sleep tonight!
Epworth Sleepiness Scale: 14
Diagnostic study: overall AHI: 0.2 events/hour; overall RDI: 45 events/hour
Titration study: AHI: 6.1; RDI: 27; CPAP pressures: 5-8cm

Not-tired behind my eyes and with a clear, cool head!

On XPAP I am not cranky - OK, well not as cranky : ) Better marriage for sure. However after 4 years I think my husband forgets how cranky I can get when NOT on XPAP. Maybe I should refresh his memory LOL.

It's amazing what sleep can do!

You're so right, gasp. Actually being able to breathe while sleeping is a good, good thing.

Today's Favorite Thing:

My right Eustachian tube clears when I mask up and I am experiencing autophony (hearing my own voice quite loudly in my right ear) less often. Though this second piece will stand the true test in August-October when my allergies kick up.

Carbonman, thank you for your poems. I felt really inspired by these lines in particular; they give me the support I need right now:
"So, 1yr after starting cpap,
at the tender age of 58,
I am reborn.
What was stolen from me for years, has been found.
What was dying, has been rebuilt.

With every night of cpap, the horizon continues to stretch farther away,
the boundaries of my limits continue to expand."

I used to live in Boulder. Your picture of the Flatirons brought me right back. Do you live there? I also used to live in Eldora, which I loved. Cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in National Forest—from right outside my front door! No hot water or toilet in my cabin. I cried when I had to leave. That one time I experienced a cool, clear sensation in my head as a result of CPAP reminded me of the Colorado-blue sky.

napstress, thank you.
We are all in this together.

I do live here. I ride the front range from Morrison to Lyons.
It is a short drive to Marshall, where I start all my Boulder rides.
I skirt Boulder on Baseline, 76th and Jay Rd., then have access to
all points north.

Sunday I will be in Estes Park to ride.
We are doing a little climbing south of town and then
doing the Big Thompson/Drake/Glen Haven loop,
which includes the infamous Devil's Gulch climb.

I'll see you on the road.

I may still be waking up in the middle of the night, but it's no longer because I have to pee.

Napstress,

I have only been using xPAP for a very short while and among the few blessed with mild Apnea (I just posted on this a couple minutes ago) but after 5 days of continuous use I had the most awesome dreams. So forgive me for butting in on your post but:
My yesterdays favorite thing: lots of really GOOD dreams ... I had one heck of a time getting to bed by 10P last night (usually out by 7 or 8P) because I slept Sooo well.

I love your idea of posting "Favorite things", hope it really takes off...

I'm thrilled when others contribute to this thread. Hearing the unexpected positive side effects of CPAP use keeps me going—and I'm running out of ideas, myself!

I'm glad to hear of your sweet dreams and extended day.

I am finally participating in my life.
I guess that sounds weird, but pre-cpap, I was a zombie.
I feel like I am part of the living after years in a fog.

I'll never forget heading up to Estes from Longmont all dressed in summer riding gear only to get hailed on and have to make it home in light snow : )

Ditto on the fewer wake ups for bathroom needs. I only get up once or twice now, a couple times not even once.
Not falling asleep anymore at the drop of a hat. Not needing naps during the day.
I wish I had started xPAP years ago, as I know by my terrible symptoms disappearing that I've had sleep apnea for years.
