MIRAGE FX NASAL MASK

Post by newname » Mon Apr 25, 2011 5:33 pm

Has anyone tried this new mask yet? I'm tempted to try it. I currently use the Activa LT and was wondering if this new mask is jsut as comfortable or more comfortable.

My DME said they got one as a sample and they promptly sent it out with someone. All they knew was that it looked good and was supposed to improve this and that. Not much to go on at this point, I understood they weren't available in the US yet and have not seen one advertised on the guest host's site. Looking forward to some reports from users though.

Wouldn't you just know it? I no sooner posted than I got the "You have mail" message. It is now available at CPAP.com for him and for her. Not as expensive as I thought it might be. Picture puts you in mind of the Quattro FX. Somebody get one and let's hear some reports!!

I'm disappointed they only make the Female pink one in small sizes. I have a big head. I'd still get one anyway, I don't really care aboutr the color as long as its comfy. My DME doesn't have it yet. It sounds like it would be smaller than the Activa LT which I'm using now. I can only hope.

I ordered this new mask from cpap.com yesterday, was told it was back-ordered but it shipped out today! I'm looking forward to trying yet another mask. Will post feedback.

I just had the opportunity to use the Small Mirage FX nasal cushion mask w/Medium headgear. I loved it. I am NOT one to appreciate or even like forehead braces but the Mirage FX forehead brace is quite uniqure, quite small, flexible.

I'm also one who wasn't impressed w/the thin outer cushion cover on the Quattro and was used to and preferred the simple cushion style masks. The thin outer cushion cover of the Mirage FX "clings" really well to facial tissue.

It is a comfortable mask. It is a quiet mask. There didn't seem to be any strong air venting from any one area as w/most masks. No blowing on your sleep partner.

If you like the nasal cushion style which I always did until I had to switch to full face since I can't seem to keep my mouth and lips shut you really should give serious consideration to this Mirage FX. I really think you will like it.

I've been trying out the Mirage softgel mask, and it kinda sticks out pretty far from the face. So when I sleep on my sides with a regular pillow, I'm a little worried that the pillw might push the mask away from my face some, which could cause leaks. This Mirage FX mask looks like it's definitely smaller and wouldn't stick out from the face near as much.

Okay, I've got all of one night (approx 8 hours) and part of a second night (approx 2 hours) in this mask so far.

Here's my observations, in no particular order -- I'm sure I needn't remind everybody that masks and mask fit, etc are personal preference things so YMMV:

1) The mask is tiny -- overall smaller than I expected, however,
2) The actual mask fit is comfortable for me
3) The headgear is very comfortable -- had no issues with adjustments or the hooks -- connecting/disconnecting and adjusting was easy.
4) The disconnect-able swivel works well although I usually do not get up at night so it doesn't really matter to me. For those that do get up, it should prove very nice to just disconnect from hose easily rather than de-mask.
5) The mask is pretty quiet -- the vents blow pretty much straight out from the mask but are very diffused so I had no issues with noise off of bedclothes, etc. (Note - vents from masks almost never bother me or DW soooo).
6) Sizing is pretty standard for a Resmed mask -- I use a medium Activa and Softgel and have a medium (standard) FX Nasal and the fit is good.
7) The seal works good and the flexibility of the soft shell allows the mask to flex and move a bit so movements and pillow pressure and such don't seem as likely to produce leaks (sidesleeper here).
For some reason this mask makes my nose itch on the outside -- much MUCH more than any other so from that respect it interfered with my sleep a bit -- hence the partial second night (went back to Sleepweaver). I plan on trying a few more nights though before making a call as to whether to keep or not.
9) My AHI numbers (1.2 & 1.0) are totally consistent with what I see when wearing any of the nasal masks I use (Sleepweaver, Activa and Softgel).
10) Leaks also look to be consistent with what I see from each of the aforementioned nasal masks.
11) Had a little bit of nose marking but nothing much at all and it faded very rapidly -- marking much MUCH less than the Activa or Softgel.

Overall, I'm fairly impressed with the mask -- the soft shell is wonderful, the seal is good, the headgear is great -- if I can get past the itch it'll likely become my #2 (possibly #1) mask -- won't know for a few more days. Not had a mask make me itch like this so not sure what exactly is going on.

Bottom line, if your in a nasal mask I believe this is definitely worth taking a look at.

If you've got questions I'll try to answer them.

I too get that outer itchiness when wearing a nasal mask, especially the ones with the shinier smooth silicon like the activa lt. Would you consider using a liner if the itchiness keeps up?
