Tempur-Pedic Mattress

Post by Sheriff Buford » Mon Jan 24, 2011 2:00 pm

After 6 months of successful cpap therapy, I am ready to bring my sleep therapy another notch. I am tempted to purchase a Tempur-Pedic mattress. I value everyone's opinion here, so I was wondering if you have a Tempur-Pedic mattress, if you can give me some tips:

- does it work for you?
- I heard if you sweat alot, you may not want to geta Tempur-Pedic mattress, because it retains the body heat. Has this happened to you?
- Is there a difference in the different models?
- any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks, Sheriff

What I know is that TP costs a fortune, so I found (online) a place (of others I know about) that has the same basic quality in terms of support (5.2 lb density - it's always expressed in lbs) vs cheaper ones of lesser (e.g. 4 lb) density, and got one for a lot less. I'm quite happy with it, supposedly it'll last a long time, so I imagine it's up to you.

Asking about mattresses is like asking about pillows, cleaning cpap equipment, etc--you'll get as many different opinions as people who answer.......

Personally, I love my tempur-pedic mattress...........I do not find it to retain body heat, but I don't use heavy blankets with it either. I do sleep alone (but wish I didn't--oh wait, you didn't ask that..... ) When my folks stayed over and took my room, my Mom did complain of the heat. It's not been an issue for me. I do not remember different models--just different bases and sizes. My mattress is quite thick--and so high, but I use a regular frame, etc. I've had my bed about five years now. You honestly never feel another person move on the mattress....it is wonderful that way. You could set a glass of wine on the bed and jump around like in the ads--but I'm not sure why you'd want to.......you can leave the wine next to the cpap on the night stand.

I use a temper-pedic pillow also, and love it--I've bought buckwheat pillows etc, and always gone back to the temper-pedic pillow that I started with. I do not have any problem with dislodging masks etc when I turn.

The bed is so comfortable that at times I think I get stiff from not moving....

Julie, that's what I did. Saved about $2000 and it feels the same as the TP.

I tried a Temper-Pedic once. I bought it at Sleep Country here in Ontario Canada, where they have a 90 day money back or exchange policy.

I tried it but I just woke up stiffer and sorer every morning. I tried it for 3 weeks. I don't know why that was the case but I have Rheumatoid Arthritis and I expect I moved even less than I do usually (which is not a lot) with the Temper-Pedic. I don't recall noticing excess sweating.

I exchanged it for another type of mattress and am very happy with it.

This, of course, is just 1 person's experience. It may be just great for you!

I have a Tempur-pedic and love it, but as others have said, a mattress is a very personal thing. My partner thinks it is too soft... he doesn't like that you "sink" into it and it forms around you. I, on the other hand, like that over the feeling of a hard spring mattress. I feel it gives more natural support of your body's natural contours, whereas some people prefer a flatter service.

It does tend to retain body heat more than a standard mattress, but not a whole lot--not to the point that it bothers me at all. But, note it is also sensitive to room temperature--if your room is cold, the material will be firmer, and vice-versa for a warm room.

There is a difference between the models--the high-density material on the higher end models feels a bit different than the standard material. I have the lowest of the high-density material version and like how it feels--I have been told that the standard material feels harder (in which case people like my partner may like it better). Their web site lists which models have the high-density material vs. standard.

Whatever you do, make sure that the place you buy from has a trial period where you can return it before that ends (and be sure to find out what the restocking fees might be). That way, if you try it out and find that it is not for you, you can exchange it for a standard mattress or a sleep number bed (which I don't like because of the hard center between the two sides on the queen).

Slept on a TP bed at my in-laws for a few nights and it was OK - prefer our Sleep Number bed though, so does DH.

Best thing is to try one, or an off-brand if you can with a return policy if you don't like it.

I hear that natural rubber latex mattresses are a great compromise to the Tempur-Pedic and last a lot longer. A latex mattress will conform to your body but also has more support. I don't believe it has the heat issue. Once I win the lottery, I may buy one!

We use a fairly soft pillow-top mattress at home. I use a Medslant wedge pillow on top of that.

We have a STROBEL mattress. It has been FANTASTIC since the day we got it. It's 12 years old. They originally made mattresses for burn victims in the hospital. They really stand behind their product (30 year warranty!) and have SUPER customer service. He have looked forward to going to bed every single night. If you buy it? Get the top of their line:

We bought our Temper back in 2005 and have loved it sense. I sweat a ton at night but have never noticed it to be any worse than it was. The mattress came with a 10 year warranty and at this point we can't imagine it won't last the full 10 years. I have tried the sleep number mattress and liked it as well and we would have failed to that one if we did not like the Temper.

The big advantage the Temper gives you is you can try it for something like 90 days (you need to verify that if you buy one) and if you like it great but if you don't you take it back and get a full credit towards the purchase price of another mattress. Kind of hard to go wrong with that deal and you get to really try it out versus just laying on it in the store.

They are kind of pricey but absolutely worth it. Would also add that the money saved with the knock-offs may or may not be worth it. A friend of mine (I worked with at my last assignment) did the same thing some have described and was happy for a while but the knock-off did not begin to last as long. Based on how long ours has lasted he has already exceeded what we spent by $1500. Might end up saving money in the long run but I don't think so.

Good luck!

Mike

A year and a half ago we purchased a latex mattress. I felt the mattress etc. but didn't actually lay on it. I had heard that they were better than the Tempurpedic mattresses so went ahead and purchased it. Found that it was too hard and made my joints hurt more in the morning. So as a compromise I purchased a 4 inch thick CoolMax tempurpedic mattress topper. Cannot imagine going back to an innerspring mattress ever again.

We have both a Tempur-Pedic and a Latex mattress in our home. My wife and I sleep with the Latex and we use the Tempur-Pedic in our guest room.

Our latex mattress is much softer feeling and we sometimes wake up with some back pain from it. I know they come in different firmness levels. I think we got the one that was least firm. The Latex mattress does not generate any heat which is nice. Our Tempur-Pedic is much firmer feeling and does generate some heat. It has not been much of a problem noticed by anyone sleeping on it.

If I had to do it over again I think I would still go for a Latex mattress but I would go a notch or two firmer.

As everyone says - this is a very personal experience and you won't know for sure until you sleep in one for a couple of weeks.

I have owned one for 10 years and can tell you YES if your prone to night sweats this will add to it, also i have tried BoB-Opedic NOT the same, there build quality is noticeably cheaper hence why you pay less. I say go with Temperpedic if your are getting one, but be forewarned it does make you hot and sweat more if you already have this problem

Strobel mattress are an excellent choice compared to Tempur-Pedic and any other memory foam or latex on the market. Strobel has been recognized as the first American company to develop memory foam mattresses in the USA. They also offer a complete line of mattress that our memory foam, latex or a combination of both. They are also available with out the FR (flame Retardant Chemicals) that the CPSC mandates be put in mattresses and does not make the mattress manufactures tell you what chemicals they put in the mattress. The chemicals that are in mattress are the following:

go to Strobel's website for all the chemical information and government regulation on what you are sleeping in at night and possibly killing you or creating long term health problems. that would be Strobel Dot Com

Also Strobel uses Soy based memory foams and regular foams that contain no FR chemicals and are toy grade meaning that they can be ate in large quantities and no be toxic to a children or animals. They use a natural latex (Dunlop) not Telalay which many manufactures will claim is better but they have a chemical air injected process and some is man made.

Additionally they have 100% organic cotton sleep surface and a removable cover to access the interior component or clean if it should get soiled. They have less off gassing and sleep 90 cooler than traditional petroleum base memory foams do to the more open cell formulation that they use in their foams.

Best of all you can actually access they layers and clean and vacuum the mattress and allows for easy replacement of components! They do not use glues to hold the layers together. Personal example is my sister had her dog eat the mattress one day and called Strobel and for a small cost they replaced the cover and memory foam, the bed was has good as new.

Did I mention even though they are still expensive to some budgets it is possible the last mattress you have to purchase and cost are typically 1-2 thousand less for a comparable Tempur-Pedic model!

Great night sleep and no toxins in your body make you sleep even better!

The 600 is the best I have tried with 3 inches of natural memory form and 3 inches of natural latex plus they have a patented lever-support system that added in adding support to the void areas so you body is evenly supported across the hold surface and they have a HD otho core on the bottom for support.

Plus if you get a prescription from your doctor or chiropractor you do not have to pay taxes and it can even be a tax deduction because it is considered a medical device. The AGI is still 7.5 percent so this deduction maybe better if you do not have large medical bills during the year but the taxes save you hundreds of dollars depending on where you live more maybe!

Having used them, I can't recommend memory foam mattresses. Having a solid foam mattress causes you to sink and the foam shapes around your skin, like it is supposed to, but this traps sweat. It's not pleasant.

During my sleep study I used a Sleep number and despite the hookup, I really liked the mattress. Haven't used it long term though.

Right now I'm using a standard mattress with a memory foam topper which is cheaper and preferable to an all foam mattress.
