Does a hose cozy really prevent rainout?

Hi all.....I had my first trauma with my equipment last night.

One of our cats discovered my dangling climateline hose and decided to investigate it with her claws. The consequences were NOT good for the hose. Darn! And I had always been so careful about keeping it up!

so I swapped out for the normal slimline hose, and of course it rained out but good. Gee, I never new that the water in the hose would bubble and burp and make enough noise to wake me up! It's cold in our bedroom and I've discovered that I can't sleep without the humidity pretty high.

Not a good night.

Until my new climateline hose is delivered, I'm stuck using the unheated hose. I AM going to make a cozy for it.

So my questions are:

1. Does a cozy really work?

2. Is there a type of material that works better? I have a selection of polar fleece, windblock polar fleece, normal quilted cotton (think bathrobe type of fabric), and fabric that wetsuits are made out of. I also have a selection of batting in different weights--from lightweight quilt batting to thick upholstery batting. Why yes, I AM a fabriholic...

while I'm still not sleeping completely through the night with my best buddy Darth, I had to turn him off about 2 a.m. after the serious rainout noise and I did NOT sleep well for the rest of the night. I've got to make the regular hose work for a few nights!

Off the reconfigure where Darth sits and to figure out how to keep the hose out of kitty reach (we have five cats of various ages!)

YES, the lighter the weight the better. Keeping the humidifier lower than your head also helps. As does turning down the humidifier level.

Keeping the kitties out of the bedroom may be the only way to save your hose. You may not agree but it will certainly be cheaper. Also putting it away when not in use, maybe in a drawer?

Spare hoses are a must in houses with kitties but everyone should have spares.

I am a frabraholic too . I used leftover fleece from other projects, made hose covers, stap covers and a cover for my machines.

Mine prevents rainout, yes. I never used to use the humidifier before, because of that. Then I got a cozy cover and I can crank it up as high as I want with no rainout. I think mine is a fleece type material. Very cozy.

I tried to crochet one myself but that didn't work out.

Mine are made of thick fleece about 2 feet longer than the hose with each end secured to the hose with a small ponytail scrunchy. When covered the hose is less likely to be interesting to the cats. Of course, when I got my equipment hooked up the first time, we brought in all the cats in one at a time for sniff investigation and then I turned it on...wow, you never saw cats vacate a bedroom so fast

Where the heck did you find it and did ya pay a fortune for it? All the places I've found price it waaay outta my reach right now.

Another fabriholic here, I was thinking of trying fleece outer with a slippery inner lining, maybe rayon bemberg, or poly satin so the hose slides in easily. Of course that may be to much trouble for a few nights,keep me posted

Thought of duct tape....but hubby is an engineer/fixit kinda guy, and he surmised that it might be silicone so he patched it with some silicone. Of course, this morning we realized that it wasn't silicone because the patches didn't stick. Worried that duct tape would do something weird to the heater coils.

Neoprene is pricey. Two places I get it: remnants at Seattle Fabrics (but that's still pretty expensive). Best source is Craigslist--look for old/leaking wetsuits! Goodwill and other used stores are also good places to find used/leaking wetsuits.

bright pink camouflage polar fleece covers mine and keeps the claws away too.

Go to the Dollar Store. They sell lengths of fleecy material as a neck scarf. Zip a seam up the edges and voila ~ a cheap hose cover. Comes in asst. earth tone colors!
Until you get to the store(s), snip the ends off some old tube socks and thread the hose thru, overlapping to keep it from slipping down, then rubber band the ends to the hose.
I use a silky drawstring bag on one end of the hose so it will slide thru the cozy.

Yes fleece cozy's do help to lessen or prevent rainout. I also had mine made longer and keep it in place with zap straps.

If your using a regular hose ... running the excess hose under the blankets with you will also help with rainout.

Turning down your humidifier will also help.

I just did one out of 200 weight polar fleece (that's the heavier outdoor weight), and made it a bit on the baggy side to make it more difficult for kitty claws to get through. Elastic on both ends to snug it down. Now it feels like a cuddly snake!

Trick for making it easy to thread hose through: Put a small plastic bag (sandwich baggie) over the end of the hose and voila! easy and quick threading. This is an old trick I use when threading curtains onto curtain rods and other things like that--the bag adds a nice level of slipperiness and makes it quick and easy.

I find if I fill my humidifier no more than 1/2 full my hose does not burp and bubble. I keep my machine much lower than the bed and set to no more than 2. My bedroom is cool and I very seldom have problems with rainout. Good luck in finding a solution.

I like the idea of 200 wt polar fleece, my kitties have long claws, and they don't like nail trims. Thanks for the idea

I may very well be the remnant queen.--little wild pieces waiting for a project.
My cheek strap sleeves are made of hot pink blanket fleece. No lines any more.
I made a hose cozy that was too small (oops) in one spot to get all the way on the slimline hose, so I cut off a piece for the short hose on my FX.
It probably helps with the gap between the Climateline and my face. I like 84 degrees--mmmm, warm.
Only had real bad rainout once--in a camper--no low place for the blower, windows open, rainy night.
Still a wonderful sleep--even with a wet nose.

I use climate line hose myself. I bought a back up hose off ebay. You may want to check on ebay. I also use a hose cover..more for look(no plastic feel or look) I bought two hose covers off ebay. They are 9 feet long so they fit really well on any hose I put it on.
