Ages?

Post by SnoozyQ » Thu Nov 11, 2010 11:55 am

I was curious at to what age members are now and what age they were diagnosed?
(not to be offensive, don't feel obligated to answer)
Just curious to see all the various ages that have been diagnosed.

I am 33 and diagnosed at 33.

I am 63 and was officially diagnosed at 62.
I have had symptoms for over 20 years; but was probably mis-diagnosed as normal
by an HMO-ordered (very possibly fraudulent) 'sleep study' 19 years ago.
The HMO no longer exists.

I was about your age when diagnosed (33 to 35). Frankly, I don't remember exactly when it was. I have used CPAP/BiPAP/ASV for 20 years now. (Perhaps a bit over that, based on the current agest of my children). My son is over 20 and I don't think he was 1 when I started using it.

Funny story on that. I remember snoring so loudly that my children woke up screaming. My wife woke with a loud shout (startled), sorted out what happend and told me: "You take the older one, I'll take the younger, and make an appointment with the doctor tomorrow!". "Yes, dear!". So, when people ask if I snore, I can honestly say my snoring terrifies women and children.

By the way, I started snoring and stopping breathing in my teens (from about 13 onward) per my sister. She complained that I sounded just like our grandfather, who almost certainly had obstructive sleep apnea (though it was not a diagnosis at the time).

I was diagnosed at 58, but have probably had it at least 10 years going by my symptoms, and probably even longer. I've suffered from non-refreshing sleep longer than that, and in all that time no one suggested a sleep study.

37 now and 36 dx. Probably had symptoms about 15 years or so. (edited to say: in 2008, I was at a retreat in a bunkhouse. The first morning, 4 of my bunkmates (of 14) who all had CPAP pulled an "intervention" on me. Took me 2 years to get the study done).

SnoozyQ, if you're anything like me (and perhaps others) you might think you're too "young" to have OSA. Don't know if that's the motivation here. Seems like the ages of folks on the forum are all over the board. You might consider going back to your original post, editing, and simply polling (use the poll option) to see how old folks were when they were diagnosed.

Would be an interesting consideration, anyway.

But it's your thread. If I haven't said this already, welcome!

diagnosed this summer at 52. Husband has been nagging me about getting a sleep study done for about 3 years. And no noticeable daytime symptoms before diagnosis. And no nighttime symptoms except for the very important one of my husband witnessing occasional apnea/hypopnea episodes at night and some intermittent snoring that was occasionally loud.

Diagnosed at 44. But I think I have had OSA since I was in my early 20s. When I got married my husband shook me from a deep sleep because he said my lips were blue and I was pale and looked like I was dead.

It was not until recently when I spent the night at a friends house I was told I snored so bad the whole block heard me. I had a sleep study done...because my friend also has OSA and is refusing treatment. I thought if I got myself a sleep study on the complaints of my friend that they would do the same for me.

Well, I am on the hose and my friend is still doing the "this will go away when I lose weight dance"
Diagnosed 08/31/10. Titration 9/02/10. Started CPAP 11/01/10. Auto mode 10-15cm. Alternate mask GoLife for her. Back up mask Full-life full face w/Pad-a-cheek mask liner. Comtec CMS F50 wrist pulse oximeter. Sobakawa Cloud Pillow, Sleepyhead software

I am 62 now and I think I was around 56 when diagnosed but like a lot of the others that have posted, I'm sure I had OSA for years before dx. I think I started the loud snoring when I was in my early 40's. My mom and dad were both champion snorers, together they could shake the rafters of the house. I have one brother that is two years older than me and he has also been diagnosed with sleep apnea.

With your long, lean neck, I'd say about 22...........don't quite know about that dx age though. You must be confused.

Being built for a very long famine, I truly do detest individuals who are long and lean.

46 - diagnosed at 45

Doc said I've probably had OSA for 30+ yrs based on symptoms from back in my teens.
