hot exercise program for CPAP users!

Post by kick » Thu Oct 28, 2010 3:52 pm

has anyone found a good exercise program to ease into (once CPAP is working well and sleep is deep and satisfying)?

Yoga, Chi gung are both gentle starting routines that also teach you how to breathe properly

Some form of exercise will be needed to compensate for the lost "exercise" previously generated during untreated nightly apneic episodes. Studies have established sufferers of severe OSA were burning just less than 400 calories per night during the nightly exertions of their respiratory/circulatory systems and workouts from their adrenal glands ...... never mind although walking to and from the bathroom.

That suggest we would all get thin from not being treated, but can assure you that was not the case for me. If anything I gained weight in the past few years of really bad sleeping, although I do exercise quite a lot (walking, strength training).

Ya know, come to think of it, b4cpap I would wake up in a heavy sweat with my heart racing and thinking I just had an aerobic workout.

I thought I had some exotic disease but I was just losing weight while I slept. What Americans wouldn't pay for that?

Could throw in some PLMD or RLS for another $50.

Get a wooden block like kids play with the ones with the ABCs. Place one in the middle of the floor and carefully walk around it twice. Do this daily. When your doctor asks if you have been exercising you can truthfully tell him you walk around the block twice a day.

Ha! I can see it now.....

Me: Why aren't you using your cpap?

Non-compliant patient: It's ruining my exercise routine.........

Seriously: When I started getting back into exercising, I had a lot of fun playing sports with friends. I'm a competitive person though, so playing raquetball when I was really out of shape (I still insit round is a shape) with my in shape friends was tough. it motivated me to work harder. Through playing raquetball, I didn't burn a lot of fat, but my cardio got MUCH better, because I was effectivly doing wind-sprints.... running hard and fast, with a break in between. Pretty soon I was running all over the court, screaming and yelling, running into walls, getting concussed.....

On second thought, that walking around the blcok idea sounds much better......

Just remember: every little bit helps, and if you loose significant portions of weight (i'd say 30+ lbs) get an auto-titration, as your pressure probably dropped!

You have succedded already with a positive attitude, I hope you are feeling rested also. Start with walking and increase the distance as you get into shape. Stairs or a hill is good when you get in better shape. Park further from your destination and walk. It all adds up. Try to get a partner to work-out with, you will help each other stay committed. Before pushing too hard if you have been sedentary for a long time you should consult your Dr. My wife tells me to jump in a lake and go fly a kite quite often, so I am in pretty good shape! Welcome aboard! john

If you seen the video kteague shared with us, you wouldn;t want that. I am sure if possible, she would gladly pass it on to a willing victim. It would burn quite a lot of calories, but you would be pretty tired by morning. I realize your joking and feel kteague has a great sense of humor about rls and hope she wont be offended either. We all want an easy exercise program don't we. I am fairly active, but my body mass index show I need a bit more height. john

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7785118.stm

Those with the worst sleep apnoea symptoms burned 373 extra calories a day compared with those with only mild symptoms, US researchers found.

Scientists have been probing the link between weight gain and sleep apnoea, and the team from the University of California, San Francisco, measured the number of calories burned "at rest" by 212 patients.

On average, the volunteers expended 1,763 calories a day this way, but those with the worst apnoea symptoms expended 1,999, while those with the mildest form of the condition expended an average of 1,626.

The extra calories consumed are the same as a vigorous 30-minute workout in the gym.

The authors of the study, published in the journal Archives of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Surgery, led by Dr Eric Kezirian, suggested that energy used by the nervous system as it responded to the poor quality sleep patterns of heavy snorers might be to blame.

Firstly, they spent less time in deep sleep, where the body temperature naturally drops, they might expend more energy just struggling to breathe, and each time their sleep was interrupted by breathing problems, their body would fire a dose of adrenaline, burning up yet more calories.

Recumbent exercise bike with a bench seat and large electonic readout of data. I hit 9 months on the hose before I could go more than a few mins without the shaky legs and immediate exhaustion, then shazam 10 mins for 3 days, then 15, then 20, then 30, then 45, then 60 by 12 months as a hosehead. Takes some time but the body wants to move when it gets rest.
