Another post about using wipes on mask

Post by izzyb » Wed Sep 22, 2010 2:33 pm

I have a question about baby wipes. I know that we are not supposed to use wipes that have alcohol, fragrance, or lotion in them. My DME and my father's DME, and I know people on this forum recommend using baby wipes. But I have a problem finding one without some type of lotion. Since it is for a baby's behind, that makes sense. But the ones that are alcohol and fragrance free have aloe in them (if not some other kind of lotion). Is Aloe okay to use on masks? Are they not considered a "lotion"? I assume that Wet Ones are out of the question since they (and others like them) are antibacterial.

Order them from an online DME and you'll get the right stuff.

With the risk of sounding dumb...what are you using wipes for?
And how often?

I use the Wally World fragrance-free baby wipes with aloe.
I don't think aloe contains any kind of grease. (no effect on the silicone)
I wipe the exterior silicone parts down each morning, and rarely anything more.
The take-down and put-together seems abusive to the FX.
With the Mirage Mini and then the Swift FX, my cushions and pillows were crapping out at 2 or 3 weeks
with the manufacturer-recommended washing technique--
(white deposits everywhere)
I tried the wipes-only method while on vacation--and the pillows have held up MUCH better.
Why would the manufacturer tell us how to make them LAST, anyhow?

Usually to clean the silicon of the mask, to wipe off grease, moisture, dirt, etc. I would guess that most people use it daily, in the morning, after removing their mask. And the wipes would be a replacement for washing the parts. See what chunkyfrog wrote above.
There is usually no reason to clean the hard plastic parts of the mask daily.
Some people (Wulfman ) never wash or clean their mask and they say it seals better this way. True story!

They told me to throw my pillows, with the straps into a sink of water with Ivory Soap! But I forget how often they said to do that. It was a lot to absorb at first, so I'm going to go over that with her again when she comes. She's suppose to be here today, but no phone call yet!

Pampers makes a fragrance and lotion free wipes. Sorta expensive, but I bought them at Wallmart.

My wife bought some adult wipes about a year age (this was way before I was DXed with S.A ). I have no Idea why she bought them but they just sat on the shelf so I started using them. They have a slight fragrance to them but no lotion or alcohol.

I was shocked two weeks ago. I download the data from my smart card every Sunday and take a quick glance at the charts, just to see if all is well. Three weeks ago I started cleaning my face and the Quattro mask every night before putting the mask on. The charts showed almost no leaks and my pressure remained steady. AHI's decreased and I feel better. I always washed my face before going to bed, but only washed the mask once a week. Some people never wash their mask and feel that helps with good mask/skin adhesion. I will continue to watch the data, but for now I will use baby wipes every night.

I have checked every wipe at Wal-Mart and all the ones that are alcohol and fragrance free have aloe vera AND some have vitamin E also. I'm pretty sure vitamin E is oily/greasy. I even bought the Wal-Mart brand that is alcohol and fragrance fee but has aloe vera and vitamin E. I have used them, but quit because I got worried about the aloe and E. I have looked at every one there and one without aloe does not exist. I would just like confirmation that aloe and E will not make the mask greasy or break it down.

The ones at online are expensive and the website does not say how many are in the container.

Also, I agree with not taking the mask completely apart. I quit doing that a long time ago. Some are very complex and a pain to get back together and I don't think it is good for them to be taken apart so much.

I would just like some input on this in case that is what is causing a not-so-great seal. My mask is only about three months old and it is already leaking. It did much better when it was new.

Thanks, izzyb

I agree that they are expensive.... usually 62 per container. I did see that Sam's Club has a case of them at a much reduced price. http://www.samsclub.com/sams/shop/produ ... tId=189520

Yes, that blue eyed beauty is my cat! He is a seal point, bi-color Ragdoll. I adopted him in '08 from folks who could no longer care for him. He is a joy and makes me smile each and every day.

Emilia, thanks! I didn't know you could get them anywhere else but at this parent website. Although Sam's Club is a little more than Wal-Mart's baby wipes, they are not a lot more expensive and they are made for masks. I think I will call my local Sam's Club and see if they carry them in the store (probably not) so that I can just buy them one at a time.
