Mouth Breathers

Post by bilnap » Thu Sep 09, 2010 8:06 am

How do you handle your mouth breathing? What type of mask are you using? Do you use a chin strap? What kind of chin strap? Have you considered a total face mask? Why or why not?
Thank you for your input, I have all these decisions to make and so little time.

I think you will find that almost all users of FF masks are mouth breathers. Are you having a problem with yours???

I use nasal pillows (Opus 360). When I started I tried taping but for some reason it made me yawn more and it became a challenge.
One of the members on here (Pugsy) introduced me to chin straps (she sent me one to try) and it worked for me...
I then got one from my DME that I used for a while... I knew I needed one because I would wake up with a dry mouth.
After a while I found I did not need it anymore, the pressure of the cpap would keep my mouth shut. Not sure why, but
lately I have found the need for the strap again... dry mouth has returned.
When I did my second sleep study they put a full face mask on me and I was not having it... Not comfortable (to me) at all...
Then used a nasal mask and that worked fine... When I went home with a machine after a few days it was hurting me too bad
(the bridge of my nose). Thats when I went to nasal pillows. Hope this helps

I use a Fisher and Paykel flexi-fit 731 which fits down under my chin. It allows me to mouth breathe (although I find myself doing that less now) but my jaw can't slip down below the mask like it did with a different full face mask.

I use the Innomed Hybrid mask (nasal pillows with an oral interface attached). Very light weight and doesn't sit on the bridge of my nose.
I also have a Phillips Respironics FitLife mask that covers almost the whole face. However, I can't get it to fit on the forehead right without considerable pain and it creates a chimney effect causing all the air to go right up and out. I'd like to use this one more but my forehead and the mask are different shapes.

Tried both a nasal mask and nasal pillows. Tried all sorts of "fixes" to make them work but when I couldn't keep my mouth taped because of my drooling, I threw in the towel.

Been using the Innomed Hybrid and really like it. It seems as now that I have "permission" to mouth breathe and drool, I do very little of either. Go figure.

I use tape over my mouth so I can use any nasal or nasal pillows mask I like. I didn't like any of the many full face masks I've tried, but that doesn't mean you wouldn't be able to find a FF mask to suit you.

You shouldn't need a chinstrap with a FF mask...are you having problems or are you just looking to spend some money?

My RespCare Hybrid allows me to breathe thru just my nose, just my mouth, or a combination which suits my periodic total nose blockage...gotta love my allergies, chronic sinusitis, vasomotor rhinitis

I use a full face mask, and I also use tape in a pattern similar to a chin-up strip. Can't seem to make a chin strap work, and they are uncomfortable. I used to use a nasal mask and tape over my mouth, but my doctor convinced me this was a bad idea. So I switched to a full face mask with just tape around my mouth instead of over it.

I am not looking to spend money. I use a Liberty Mirage full face mask and a chin strap, my mouth still opens and I end up biting my cheek when I try to close. Also I have a sore on the bridge of my nose. That is why I am trying to get additional information re: experiences from other users and what they do.

I use the Mirage Micro with a Respironics premium chin strap, they both work great for me. I didn't start mouth breathing until I tried the Swift nasal pillows.

Are you sure that's the name of your mask? A Liberty doesn't have anything on the bridge of your nose.
