Best Full Face Masks?

Post by dif » Tue Jul 27, 2010 8:16 pm

I have been swallowing air throughout the night and have decided to get refitted for a full face mask at my DME. I was wondering what people consider as the best full face mask? Thanks.

The best FF mask is the one that fits you comfortably. Every face is different. Your DME should give you a 30 day trial with any mask.

I too like the Fisher Paykel -- good design. My mask is the Forma model. I consistently get Zero leak levels and it's comfortable and quiet. Added benefit is the mask captures/supports your chin to keep mouth for dropping open. No other FFM supplier on the market has chin support. For me there is a connection between opening of mouth contributing to obstructive apneas. My mask came with 2 interchangeable sizes of gaskets/seal which contacts the face - med. and large. I tried the medium first because I was a medium with my previous mask - Resmed Quattro. However, the medium ended up being too tight leading to soreness on nose bridge (typical problem for all FFM I have tried). After switching to the large gasket It was much more comfortable and the nose bridge soreness went away.

The Innomed Hybrid has a flap that supports the chin. Some people like it; others have cut it off.

dif, I use the FitLife Total Face Mask which I find works well, though not a FFM.

Chin support in hybrid does not work as well because when you move your jaw slightly it pulls the nose pillows out or causes leaks. That's why many people cut it off the chin support from Innomed Hybrid.

I can move my jaw/chin a little with with the F&P full face mask and have no leaks at all.

I use (and love) the Hybrid (made by InnoMed/Respcare). I'm covered, in case I mouth-breathe (but I rarely do with this mask, thanks to the chinflap). There's less area to seal, there's nothing on the bridge of my nose, and there's nothing on my forehead. I can wear my eyeglasses if I need to. The Liberty (made by ResMed) is very similar, but there are important differences between the two:

1. The Liberty is limiting, size-wise; the Hybrid comes with three sizes of oral cushion and three sizes of pillows, and the pillows are height-adjustable. The pillows on the Hybrid can also be separated (thus, if your nares are different sizes, you can use two different-sized pillows).

2. The Hybrid's chinflap. It keeps my mouth closed, and I breathe through my nose.

As posted by someone else in this thread, the Hybrid is NOT the only FFM on the market with a chinflap. The Hans Rudolph V2 7600 is a more typical FFM with a chinflap, but I've never tried it. Some of us LOVE the chinflap; others who use the Hybrid choose to cut it off. What works for you (regarding everything about this therapy) is what works for you.

Not a problem, for me. I employ a scrunchy fix (see viewtopic.php?p=446053#p446053) to keep the pillows in place, and my leaks are always in line. Granted, it's a little more "stuff" on my face, but it works for me.
Veni, vidi, Velcro. I came, I saw, I stuck around.
