crummy little filter on the S9 autoset

Post by elena88 » Tue Jun 01, 2010 2:25 am

Hi there,

I was curious to see my filter in my s9 auto today, so I pulled it out. I have had this NEW machine for 28 days.
It says to change the filter every six months, or more frequently if needed..

after 28 days the filter was filthy! I keep the area behind my machine very clean..

BUT, this filter was so flimsy, it was a crummy little white filter you could see through.
I was very dismayed that it did not have a very dense foam filter you could take out and wash once a week, like the pr system one,
which not only had that feature, but it had a back up white filter behind that which was not flimsly or see through.

Im not happy with the filter system on the s9

I looked in my resmed bag for replacemet filters, there were two of them, both more flimsy and one third the thickness of the
orginal.. so I put Both of them in there against each other..

I am now wondering if I can buy the system one foam filter and stick it in my s9. I have nasty allergies, and since this is my only air intake
at night, I want the air to be as clean as possible, and these filters LOOK pretty useless compared to what the PR system one had going.

That's not the primary purpose of a filter on xPAP kit, so your expectations are not going to be well met by any xPAP filter.

Appart from your apprehension, do you have evdience that the effectiveness outcome is any different?

Your filthy filter was clearly doing something!

Cheers,

Bill

Hi Elena,

I ordered these and hope they will help: https://www.cpap.com/productpage/resmed ... ilter.html

Actually, I have had had the S9 for just two weeks and was doing a clean up. I noticed the same thing. The filter seems dirtier than on my old Mseries APAP, which means it is doing its job. Plus we have forest fires that have been pretty fiercely smoking up Montreal that last few days so there is a bit of extra particulate gunk in the air.

ResMed apparently makes a hypoallergenic filter.

If the ResMed filter is darker than that on your old machine it might appear that it is more effective in removing material from the air. If you install a too efficient filter you might cause the machine to work harder than expected thus lowering machine life.

My attitude towards filters is that I breath the unfiltered air during the day so why a problem when I sleep. With this attitude the biggest benefit of the filter is that it keeps out insects.

I consider the cost of official replacement filters unreasonable and would be interested in a much cheaper source of filter material. It would be nice if filters were significantly less than $1 each.

You can purchase hypoallergenic filters from Resmed which do a good job of removing particulate and allergens. Locally, they cost $16 for two. Fairly pricey. I believe you can buy a pack of six in the States online, for much less.

I don't think they are washable.

I don't use Resmed, but in the Remstars by using both filters you do get some removal of pollen. Also the way filters work, the dirtier they get the more they remove from the airstream (small size particles), the problem comes from: At a point they get so dirty the the air flow is cut down, I notice this on my Remstars as the air gets warmer, and I don't like warm. I run a A/C in the bedroom almost year around, that filters the air to a degree.

A room air cleaner running to remove pollen, would help keep the filters cleaner, I have one that I use when the A/C isn't needed, but it's a loud beast. Jim

Elena i think you should try the hypoallergenic filters. I immediately upgraded to those and there is a bit more to them. I find that i'm changing my filters anywhere from 6 weeks to 3 months depending on the time of the year. Here in Arizona when you have your windows open it can get pretty dusty quickly.

I view my cpap filter functionality in the same way as my a/c filters. It helps clear the dust out of your equipment (hopefully prolonging its life) and lungs.

thanks for the tips everyone!

I will get the hypoallerenic filters!

yes, the filter was filthy, but it was filthy on BOTH SIDES.. so I dont know what a great job it was doing..

I still like the system one filter system better, great that you can wash the foam filter once a week, and it has a back up behind that..

A lot of of us have enough problems breathing, we dont need anymore complications added to the mix..

Me too. I live in the desert, surrounded by dirt, I think I need the hypoallergenic good stuff.

I change the white filter on my PR S1 every 15 days, and I wash the grey filter weekly. The grey filter never seems dirty, but by the end of 15 days the white filter is dirty and clearly ready to be changed. My room is pretty dusty, I hate to admit and up until this week our forced air central heating has been running (we had a very cold spring!!!!). Fortunately, the additional white filters for the PR's are relatively inexpensive and insurance covers 80%.

Not to change the subject, but I really hate that disposable humidifier. It is impossible to drain all the water in it, so even more impossible to dry it completely.

I was wondering if it would be possible to find a kind of material to make my pollen filters. Filters are very expensive to me when I add the shipping ($31 for 6 filters ).

I was thinking if it would be a good idea to take a N95 mask and cut filters from that. The N95 is supposed to be able to filter small particles so I imagine pollen too, the question is if that material will not offer too much restriction to the air passage.

Any idea, suggestion or comment? What else do you think we can use to make our own disposable (pollen) filters ?

Rosacer,
where do u buy your filters from? $31 for shipment such light and small filters are really really expesive

I bought from CPAP-supply, e-bay and CPAPauction but now since I switched to S9, I need to buy new filters.

Your idea of cutting our own filters from basic material is a great idea. What I wonder is whether Respironics and Resmed filters are OK if we use the same materials and then cut to size...

Anybody can confirm?
