Could be as simple as your mouth is opening. I find it an unpleasant feeling if I allow my mouth to open while using cpap.
Chin strap would probably overcome it.

Oh, I think you misunderstood - I was asking about your prescribed pressure(s).

Oh... just for the record, those aren't "settings", just the low and high end defaults for the machine's range. It seems that a whole lot of us are in the mid range and have set our machines to about 8 at the low end, 12 at the high, which doesn't lock in a ceiling of 12 tho' for individual events and works better than a wider range because if you set the ends too far apart (with your average in between), the machine takes too long to reach the high end before cutting off an apnea.

Max, do you know if you have EPR (Exhale relief) set? It can be set for ramp time only, or full-time, and gives you exhale relief of 1, 2 or 3 cm H2O. If you have difficulty exhaling against the pressure, and can't exhale fully, then you won't have room for a full inhale.

Start from the Home Page. You can access the Clinical Menu by pressing the big button/dial and the long button that has 2 check marks on it, both at the at the same time. You will come to the Settings Page. You can scroll down by turning the dial, until you come to EPR, then push the button to access that setting, and make the change. The next option is the level--1,2,or 3.

I hope that this will make your therapy more comfortable for you.

I use the 2 setting, but many here use 3. When I have tried 1 or none, I get immediate bloating. I also get bloating when I use the Mask Fitting Feature, which is a fixed pressure with no EPR.

If my machine is set at 8 and 12 doesn't that lock in the ceiling of 12? I thought the high setting is the highest the machine will go for any events.

Max250 wrote: If my mouth is filling with air due to insufficient exhalation, is there a way of finding out for sure? The DME has sent over a Quattro full face which hopefully I should get this evening. But if insufficient exhalation is the cause or perhaps aerophagia then I dont know if the FFM is going to help.
Max, are you using apap or cpap, at what pressures? When I was using the S8 AutoSet II, I found I preferred cpap mode, because the changing pressure disturbed my sleep, and I got aerophagia. And even on cpap, if I went over 10 cm, I got aerophagia. Gradually, I was able to increase it to 10.8, where I still had 2-3 apneas a night, but it was a worthwhile tradeoff.

On the S9 AutoSet, that is not an issue for me, but perhaps, you would do better on by lowering your maximum (to 1 or 2 cm above 95%), or trying cpap mode (at 95%)? I'm just guessing here, of course, and don't presume to offer medical advice.

Also for aerophagia, it's better not to eat 3 hours before bedtime. And here's a helpful yoga pose:

Its also called Gas Relieving Pose, for good reason.

Check your detailed graphs, in the 5 minute view--do you see any irregularities in Flow, Flow Limitation and Minute Ventilation?

Hope this helps.

Katie
