does rainout end your night?

Post by Gilley » Tue May 11, 2010 9:46 am

Well for me it does... I either remove the mask and sleep without it or, after the "waterboarding" I'm up for the night. As my pressure has gone up I have had to raise my humidifier level to keep from getting the dry mouth. But it seems all to often I get rain out. after getting up and drying everything out I still have water getting in the mask. I have the hose cover but that doesnt help...What do you do?

Have you tried slinging the hose over the top of your headboard or something to that effect?
Water drains back into the tank instead of collecting in the mask.
You could also try slipping a piece of cotton string in the mask to absorb moisture.

I have been having Rainout Issues in the early Am but nothing Severe--Just a few drops leaking on the upper lips. When this Happens I Route the Hose over my Head as previously mentioned so the water Drains back into the tank. I Just Purchased a New Aussie Heated Hose off of E Bay( for a Steal I might add ) and I will see tonight if that solves the rainout Problems for me. The Aussie Heated Hoses are sold New for $ 139.99 But shop around if you are interested in one. I found mine on E Bay and got it for $ 40.00.

Yes, it's a rude awakening!

If it's water in the hose and mask, then all the above-mentioned things will help. Heated hose, hose management, having cpap below level of bed.

If it's water just in the mask, have a spare cushion handy, so you can change it out and go back to sleep. I also find that the SoftGel, which is interchangeable with the Activa Lt is less prone to mask rainout, maybe because it's thicker and more insulated.

What's your room temperature and humidity?

I've happily used the Aussie heated hose ( "heated cpap tube" -- sleepzone.com.au ) for many years. No rainout.

When I need a new heated hose, I'll probably just get a Repti heat cable. Cheaper way to warm an air hose.

I have the aussie hose but have not been using it much. I need to get that adapter so it runs a bit cooler. I would prob go that reptile thing too when i need to get the hose replaced. way cheaper.

Fortunately my CPAP (Fisher & Paykel) doesn't have rainout problems. All F & P machines have an ambient tracking system to eliminate rainout. It automatically adjusts the heat in the humidifier based upon the room temp.

I just lift the mask and let the water drain out across my face, curse a bit, replant mask on face and then go back to sleep.....

yes the cable is pretty cheap compared to the Aussie hose but you might want a couple of additional accessories.

A lamp dimmer can be used for temperature control, although i find mine warm enough.

A timer at the socket so you don't forget to plug it in at night and unplug it in the morning.

Depending on the amount of rainout i either suck it up and get on with sleep or I'll jump out of bed and change into backup hose/mask.

1. How about just using a fleece hose cover.

2. Another thing is to turn down the humidifier a notch or two, Most areas really don't need a high setting even if you sleep with the windows open.

I realize its a comfort thing for most people, but you only need enough heated humidity to assist the nose in warming the incoming air not replace the nose's natural ability to warm the air. Humidifiers help to prevent sinus problems including infections.

Remember that you'll most likely need to adjust your humidifier settings as the seasons/temperatures change. I'm currently using mine in passive mode (not turned on, but with water in the chamber) as the temperature here is 20°C, If it drops to 12°C then I set it to 1 and go up as it gets colder and I have yet to exceed a setting of 3 in the middle of winter (although our winters are usually fairly mild @ -3°c).
