Getting Rescan 3.10 to Run on a Mac?
Getting Rescan 3.10 to Run on a Mac?
After my second night on my S9, I'm greatly encouraged.
I want to run the software on my Mac.
1. I plan to buy Parallels. Is that a good idea or should I just stick with Bootcamp.
2. Which Microsoft Operating System should I get? Vista, etc.?
I know nothing about PC's. I would use this for Rescan for sure and maybe for one or two other small programs.
Thanks for any help.
Mitchell

Re: Getting Rescan 3.10 to Run on a Mac?
I'm on VWareFusion, WinXP, 2008 aluminum MacBook model, running 3.10 (3.7 also works).
I'm assuming either BootCamp or Parallels should work equally well. The only critical issue are the drivers for either the card reader or usb adapter....I had some minor issues getting it to read the usb connection.
Sorry - just realized OP asking about S9 machine; I'm on older S8 model so need a proprietary ResScan data card. Also, as Nord mentioned, it's easy to drag the pdf format report from WinXP desktop over to Mac OS desktop

Re: Getting Rescan 3.10 to Run on a Mac?
Hi Mitchell
Several people on this Board run a Mac with either Parallels or VMware. Myself, I use VMware Fusion 3.02 and run Win XP Pro in it's latest incarnation. Everything runs well together and I can switch between Mac and XP at will and drag files between them if you want. Other people here are using Win 7 or Vista on their PC's and install/ run ResScan 3.10 with success.
You also need a SD card reader with XP/Win 7/Vista drivers to be installed for the reader. Mostly any cheap reader will do. I personally like Scandisk and you may want to consider a multi-disk reader if you use other types of storage disks for OTHER things. You only need an SD reader for ResScan.
Some people are using locks on the SD cards when they download data to their PC... I don't myself... and you have to remember to take the lock off when putting back in the S9.
From my experience, I have not found the ResMed SD disk to be good quality. I bought a Scandisk SD card 2 Gig size. There are many makers just like in DVD/CD's.
You must also take care when leaving the program.
1. Close your patient and Save changes ... if you want
2. Exit ResScan 3.10...
3. Eject the SD card from the reader... just like any external disks in Mac
4. Suspend your Virtual Disk in VMware or Parallels
5. Exit VM or Para...
6. back to Mac World
It's all pretty easy and there is help here if you get stuck.

Re: Getting Rescan 3.10 to Run on a Mac?
I use Parallels 5 on my iMac... the only thing I need to do to get the SD care reader recognized by Windows is once the VM is running is to select the SD card reader from the Parallels Device menu to attach it to the VM instead of Mac OS X. I'm using Windows XP.

Re: Getting Rescan 3.10 to Run on a Mac?
Thanks everyone.
I guess I'll get Parallels and am leaning towards Windows 7 Home Edition because I've heard its good and seems less expensive.
Unless I hear different from you folks.
Best,
Mitchell

Re: Getting Rescan 3.10 to Run on a Mac?
This is OT but IMHO, your decision on what software to buy shouldn't be predicated entirely on ResScan 3.10. Right now Parallels seems to be 'better' than VmWareFusion but the jury is still out on Win 7.Guest wrote:Thanks everyone.

However, keep in mind, I'm a Mac user and go over to the other side only when no other option available. On my MacBook, I have only two Win apps loaded: Quicken and ResScan. Oh yea, plus anti-virus application
Re: Getting Rescan 3.10 to Run on a Mac?
Yep... same here--Quicken for the Mac has always sucked (and the new one doesn't support half of what I need), so the Windows version has to do. Luckily Parallels hides most of Windows from you.dtsm wrote:I have only two Win apps loaded: Quicken and ResScan. Oh yea, plus anti-virus application

Re: Getting Rescan 3.10 to Run on a Mac?
Oddly enough... I only have 4 apps on XP... There's a very good reason I use Mac 99 % of the time
Quicken... ResScan 3.10... Norton Virus... and another I have to use for Real Estate.

.
I chose VMWare Fusion over Parallels because the former is more user-friendly.

First a disclaimer: I work for VMware.paolo wrote:After my second night on my S9, I'm greatly encouraged.

The issue with bootcamp is that any time you want to run your windows app you will have to re-boot your mac to the windows partition. So I think you will be better off with virtualization software. I've heard good things about both Parallels and VMware Fusion, but I've heard more good things about VMware Fusion. I, of course, use VMware Fusion. It has been rock solid for me, and performs very well. My primary work computer is a Macbook Pro, but my primary work machine is a very loaded up VMware Virtual Machine running Windows XP on the Macbook Pro. My home computer is an iMac, and VMware Fusion is used on that to run a couple of Windows apps that my family still requires. I wish you would use VMware, but I'm biased. Whether you choose Parallels or VMware Fusion you should use some sort of virtualization to avoid having to re-boot just to run your windows apps.

This will help you learn about both VMware v. 3 and Parallels v. 5:gdpeck wrote: Whether you choose Parallels or VMware Fusion you should use some sort of virtualization to avoid having to re-boot just to run your windows apps.

Re: Getting Rescan 3.10 to Run on a Mac?
I use BootCamp. Since that is free, you might just want to try that first. Yes, you have to reboot, but it take about all of 60 seconds.
I do most everything on the Mac side, except for ResScan and a couple of games on the Windows side. I go back and forth between the sides at least once/day, primarily for the gaming. I maybe download my data once/month. Personally, if I only used Windows for ResScan, I would not buy something extra.
