How do you get your hose to dry when washed?

Post by bailachel » Thu Mar 18, 2010 8:01 am

I never get rainout but thought that it was probably past time to wash my hose. Lucky thing I have an extra! I washed it and then hung it over the shower rod to dry, but it didn't.

3 days later it was still wet inside. I went out of town for 3 more days and came back and it was STILL wet. Tried blowing air from the hair dryer in it. no help. I finally connected it, turned on the machine and let it run for about 20 minutes. almost dry, but now I will have a HUGE leak reported in my data. There has to be a better way?

Don't wash it.......?

Either that or just hook it back up to your machine before you go to bed. If you are using heated humidification, you're going to have moist air blowing through it anyway. What's the difference? WHY does it have to be "dry"......before you put moisture back in it?

I have yet to wash my CPAP hose......(nearly) five years since I started therapy......same hose.

I am slowly coming around to the don't wash it side and I think I will just start replacing the hose with a new one every 6 months or so and call it good.
But back to your problem, I think you probably did more to contaminate it by leaving it in the bathroom and then using a blow drier on it than if you had left it alone. Just my opinion. Washing it and putting it back on the machine is probably the best way to go.

If you really want it dry first... hook it to your flow generator with humidifier set to 0 and turn it on without you attached. The air will dry it rather quickly. Point the hose down with a towel to catch the loose water drops... voila...

I was afraid to use it with all the water drops in it after having read all the posts about rainout.

That is what I finally did Nord and you are right, it worked, I was just hoping there was another way that wouldn't look like a leak to my machine. I may join the unwashed group.

When I wash it, I normally hook it up to the machine and let it blow most of the water out, then I just hang it like normal.

Take it out in the backyard. Hold one end. Sling it 'round and 'round over your head like a lasso. (BONUS: It makes a really cool howling noise!)

In fact, I go out at night sometimes and do that even when I DON'T wash it...

Take an old PC power supply fan, lightly shrink a bottled water bottle and jam it in the fan, hook up a battery an voila!

FWIW, I don't wash my hose very often. When I do, I don't worry about the water droplets that are still inside. With a fleece hose cover and a hose hanger, I never have issues with rainout. But you have a couple of options if you want to wash yours on a regular basis:

1. Wash and dry the hose in the morning, after you've checked your data from the night before. As long as the data reporting runs from noon to noon each day, the extra blower time spent drying the hose shouldn't be reflected on your data for the next night. (If I'm wrong about that, I'm sure someone will correct me.)

2. Buy an extra hose and use it until the one that's been washed is dry and usable again. Hoses are cheap.

I hang mine up in the Arizona Room. I use the cord for the bamboo shades and tie it up and let it hang. Couple of hours it's dry as a software legal agreement.

I would NEVER < again > use a hose without washing it first.

Back in 06 when I got my first machine I was so eager I just hooked it up and figured everything was clean, after all it just came out of the plastic bag from the factory -- right?

WRONG!

Next day I felt like I had powder in my lungs -- took a couple of months for that to go away.

I believe the hose had some kind of fine powder residue in it from it's manufacture.
I learned the hard way --- wash every thing before using the first time.

I only wash the hose two or three times a year.
I've got a collection of brand new hoses all nicely sealed up in their factory bags, never opened. Wish I could sell them for what the DME charges Medicare for them. Crooked DME'S send everything the reg's allow every time I order a mask cushion. They should be charged with fraud.

Willie.......I'm courious. If you are concerned about the amount your DME is charging Medicare, why are you allowing your DME to send these hoses that you don't need??? TELL THEM TO STOP!!!!! YOU ARE THE CUSTOMER!!!!! My DME asked me if I wanted to 'sign up' for automatic shipments. I said NO.

I wash mine weekly. I dry it by emptying the humidifier chamber and setting the heat to "0" and just letting the CPAP blow it dry.

Same thing someone above advises...

I agree with this. Don't hang it in the bathroom. Ick.

I wash my hose out periodically with a vinegar/water solution. Whenever I get the hankerin' to do it - no set schedule. And, if I notice that there's an odor for some reason. Rinse it really well. Hang it up (not in the bathroom) until bedtime. Turn the machine on for a couple of seconds (without my mask on) and let it blow through the tubing. And, then go to bed. A little water in the hose isn't going to hurt. Like others have said, you're already getting moisture from the humidifier.

Do you have a cover over your hose? If not, you need to get one as soon as possible. I've had little rainout since I put mine on.

Wash the hose? ...heck no.

I just washed my mask for the first time in 6 months last evening.

When putting it on last night I noticed it was a bit fresher... but I slept exactly the same.
