Hubby Had Emergency Surgery!

Post by DoriC » Sun Feb 28, 2010 6:59 pm

Asking for prayers for Mike. He has shrapnel in his hip that cannot be removed due to it's location imbedded in his iliac bone and has now become chronic osteomyelitis. It has abscessed again this morning for the 4th time since 1999. It required major surgery today to clean it out, about 8" deep and 6"wide. Then will come the fun part with visiting wound care nurses coming for awhile, then they hand it over to me for another few months until it closes up (hopefully). Medicare's rules are to badger a family member into doing this grueling professional task and I have fought long and hard not to do it, but eventually they wear me down but I never get used to it ever! The VA refuses to help because we are using our own private drs and insurance even though he is classified as totally disabled. The one major difference this time which is scaring me is that he will be using his machine tonight in the hospital and the RT who will helping Mike never saw this machine before and thought it was so "cute" compared to the big ones the hospital uses. When I left just now, he seemed pretty alert as they used a spinal this time instead of general anesthesia, I have everything set up and he knows how to attach the hose and push the buttons so he only needs help with adjusting his mask, he never quite got the hang of that. It makes me feel better to let you all know what's happening. Thanks for reading this long post. Dori

I'm so sorry to hear about this, Dori. You and Mike are in my thoughts.

I wish for him a speedy recovery, and for you the strength to get through this chapter (in what is apparently an ongoing saga). Be sure you take good care of yourself, too, during this trying time. We're all here for you.

Dori, I'm so sorry to hear that Mike is going through this again. Thank you for letting us know.

Mike will do fine with his cpap. I think it is good that he is using his own with his settings. That should help. The RT should be able to help him get his mask adjusted. You have everything else all set.

Say hello to Mike when you see him tomorrow. Try to get a good rest tonight.

You are both in my thoughts and prayers!
