Have you given your CPAP a Name?

Post by ProfessorSleep » Sat Sep 24, 2005 12:11 pm

It is quite common for people to name their necessary mechanical aids as a way of dealing with the machines' intrusions into their lives. CPAP isn't something we have to carry around all the time, but I think it is hard to escape the thought that we do "need" those little things. I'm just wondering if that scenario applies to CPAP machines also - has anyone given their machine a name and, if so, what? (Not necessarily the same as what you might call it every now and then in fits of frustration....)

No, I thought about it since I've seen that phenomenon so often. But I really don't want that kind of relationship with it. Not yet, anyway! A popular name for intravenous and tube feeding machines (and, gee, I even remember a bone graft with that name) is George, though, at least in the Midwest. In Atlanta people liked to call their machines Lucy or Claire. Go figure.

Doesn't bode too well for my attitude, but the only names I started thinking about were truly negative!!!! Need to do some attitude adjusting!

Yes, ProfessorSleep, I gave mine a name a long time ago.

I call mine "Herman". This is in reference to Herman Munster. My CPAP is about as smart as Herman appeared to be

No permanent name, and none that I could repeat in polite or mixed company.

I remember an old wetern movie where they asked a cowboy his horse's name. His reply was "You never name something you might have to eat". I never name something I might have to throw against a wall. So my CPAP and alarm clock will remain nameless. LOL

I must admit that I have never had negative thoughts about my machine. I am just so grateful to be recovering my health after so many years. But I saw the wisdom of your posts so I asked my machine for her name and had to bend down to listen closely, as she whispered "they call the wind Mariah". So I guess that's it then, Mariah. I wonder what the name means.

I hope everyone has survived the latest hurricane onslaught. Our prayers go out to everyone affected by recent storms.

MikeMoran,

I am crying from that post, it was so comical. And I can picture you doing this, too!

Lyn,

I hate to tell you the meaning for the name you gave your machine. You may think of changing her name. I made sure more than one web site had a meaning and I found the name Mariah on two different ones that both concurred:

Meaning & Origin
Mariah is an English girl name.
The meaning of the name is `Bitter`.

My machine and I aren't on a first name basis yet...we haven't known each other that long.

But if I had to give it a name....it probably wouldn't be pretty. And the name for my mask would be so much worse.....

Amy,

LOL - great point about the mask! I don't think many of us would have very nice names for ours.

I never name something I might have to throw against a wall. So my CPAP and alarm clock will remain nameless.
That's about my same reaction, I don't know how many times that I have woke up and thrown the face mask before I got the one that I have now, across the room, I haven't thrown an alarm clock in years because (she who must be obeyed) has it on her side of the bed and I can't get at it.
I will venture to say this "They do give you the ultimate

I will say no more

Don't trust mine enough to name it yet. Trust means everything.
