mask problem

Post by roscer » Thu Dec 10, 2009 12:08 pm

Hi, yesterday I used the CPAP the fist time in my life. Weird feeling to exale. Although it was less terrible than expected.

But I wake up in the middle of the night with the mask hurting my face right under my nose. I had a line carved on my face and now it's the after-noon and I feel I have still that mask on my face, it burns around the entrance of the nostrils and I feel a kind of numbness where the mask touched my face.

I stoped using the machine at 4am and I slept the rest of the night without CPAP. Maybe the mask was too tight, could it be it's too small? Do some body know what to do to protect and help the skin from the irritation from the mask? My skin is very easy to irritate.

This morning I had something in my bronchios too, I heard it when I coughed but now it's gone.

It's a Resmed Mirage Activa.

Comments are very welcome I'm new on this experience.

Chances are you do have the mask on too tight and it could be to small. Or a combination of the two: wrong size can lead to overtightness which leads to deep marks and leaks. Also could you register and put your information in your profile so it's easier than having to type it in all the time.

A mask should achieve its seal with very light pressure. Try adjusting the straps with less tension. Since you are new to this, your equipment is still under an evaluation return period. Try again for a night or two, but don't hesitate to call your supplier and explain your difficulty. A nasal pillow mask can be much more gentle on your face, minimizing contact and using lighter pressure to achieve a seal. As far as getting the fit right the first time, mistakes happen. I was originally fitted with a mask far too small for my face and experienced discomfort and leaks. Just don't let it go, follow-up and get what works.

Hi there, I had similar problems when I first started off and it just takes a little time to adjust the mask. Try putting on your mask and switch on your machine, Then take hold of your mask and pull it foward a little away from your nose, you will be suprised how slack it can be and still keep a good seal to your face. Also the mask needs to bed in to your face just like breaking in a new pair of shoes. I dread going to the hospital for check ups on my cpap because they always issue a new mask and straps every time, Good luck, and I hope you get on well with it.
The answer my friend, is blowing in the wind.
