Update: Distillied water on a Plane

Hi folks,
Can anyone provide an update as to the leniency of of the airlines re. bringing distilled water on a plane when travelling? I'm travelling through the States in a couple of weeks and want to get a handle on how people have been making out.

The last time I did this, it was in Canada and had no problems taking a litre through security..(I did have my prescription with me just in case)

To be certain you really need to contact the airline you will be traveling with (email them even).

I know when I traveled, I had mine in my cpap bag in a Propel bottle but I hand marked it "Distilled Water". They asked me what it was and why I had it.

Using the search feature here is also a good way to find out others experieced in days gone by.

We're arriving at our destination at a late hour and I wanted to avoid searching for a drug store that is open at that time. Just laziness on my part.

Not lazy at all. That IS the smartest thing to do - bring enuff for a couple/3 days = give yourself time to find some locally.

Anyone who uses distilled water knows it is not always on the shelf when you go to the store. You can always call ahead to your hotel to ask too - some will bring it to your room.

Last trip, I took a sealed bottle of drinking water in my CPAP case labelled "purified water for CPAP machine". They would not let it go with me.
I ended up using tap water the first night and buying D water the next day.

I would guess an unsealed bottle of anything won't fly either (pun intended!) Unless your 'script specifies "distilled water" and you are willing to make a stand, I predict if you try to carry it on, you'll be leaving it in the trashcan at the TSA screening point.

My advice would be to pack a small bottle (enough for the first night) in your checked luggage.

Let us know what happens... (Unless we see it on the news! )

Drugstore? Isn't there a Wal-Mart Super Center within a mile or two of just about every jet-capable airport in the US, other than perhaps O'hara? And in the midwest, there is a Walgreens on just about ever 3rd block. It would be hard to go anywhere here in the Twin Cities without tripping over a dozen Walgreens. Why worry about something that has such an easy solution?

When I fly I get in late, use the shuttle to the airport, and leave late the next day to another destination or home. I have a copy of my Rx for disstilled water, took the original to the pharmacy got a gallon, with part of the water placed in 2 32oz prescription bottles with the prescription label on the bottles. Have never been question by TSA about the water. It is in the case with my cpap and they haven't even looked at it. If it is a multi day trip I have carried on partial bottles of water.

Like everything else, in cpap lilfe, do what works for you.

Mine was in a Propel bottle. They did ask why I had distilled water, clearly marked in my handwriting
even tho it was packed with my machine. Then asked me to open it (for testing with litmus paper) while taking the bottle I was drinking out of, no one asked me to open that. Go figure.

So on the return trip guess what was in those bottles
It's ALL a BIG game.

A lot of it depends on the TSA person, their issues, the airport and the local political climate and what you look like ( an old white fart versus any one else). It is all luck of the draw.

Ask your flight attendant for an extra bottle of water on the plane. If they balk just explain the situation... "Stores are closed, it's late, give me the frikkin' water or I'll snore like a dying water buffalo & keep everyone else awake, yadda-yadda..." They'll help you out, it's they're job.

Ok I have a stupid question......but why is it important to use distilled with cpap? and does distill water have an expiration date?
