OT: Ham Radio
Are there any amateur radio operators on the forum?
I am testing tomorrow for my technician ticket and wanted to see if there were any amongst us. I will let you know my call, when I get one.

I'm an Advanced Class. Been a ham 30+ years. Back in the days when morse code was still a requirement.
Good luck on your testing!

Thank you all for the well wishes. I think I will do ok on the test. I have the OFFICIAL AARL study guide. I have went thru that and all the test pool questions. I even found an error in the book. The book says the question pool expired in July 2009 but the VEC website says the technician pool expires in July 2010.
I have a little 2m/70cm HT on the way (with a magmount for the car) and am looking at an FT897 for when I start my homebased operations. I am really looking forward to learning morse so I can do some DX CW QSOs. I think I am going to enjoy collecting QSL cards and trying some AMSAT or EME dx.

Re: OT: Ham Radio
I an NS9E (North South 9 East or Never Seen 9 Elephants (which I have seen in Tanzania!))
Primary interest is VHF/UHF/Microwave. Was for many years an active VHF contester, and am now in the process of getting back into it.
Primary radio is a Kenwood TS2000X. Also have a Harris RF-3200 commercial HF transceiver.
VHF contest station is built up from transverters with a Kenwood TS530 and TS830 as IF rigs.
I have an Icom IC208H 2M/70cm in the car and a Kenwood TM741 2M/70cm (I think) in the pickup.
Just put up beams for 6 and 2 meters a few weeks ago, haven't had a chance to 'plumb' them in. Am also getting a couple of wire antennas up for 40 and 20 meters. So Klockchemy, we might be able to work CW (and later phone) on HF.
You can see pictures of the VHF contest station as it existed at my home in Rochester NY here
Good luck on your test. The tests are not that hard.

Re: OT: Ham Radio
Oh, you brought back such great memories for me! My uncle was a licensed "ham" and it was such fun to sit in with him. For myself, my family (brother, mom and I, actually) got very involved with cB radios...definitely the "poor relation" but great fun. Rescued me on the road more than once. too, in those days before car-phones and cell phones!!
Lots of luck on your test, and I wish you great fun on the airways! Many new friends!

Good luck on your test!!! FYI http://www.qrz.com has a pretty good practice tester if/when you decide to upgrade.....

Just getting my radios back on the air - top of a ridge in the Sierras, 55' crank up, multiple yagi's, IC-756, TS450S, FT736R (for satellites), SB220 for the big noise.....
Little/no interest in VHF/UHF/SHF except for emergency services - have worked many fires, floods, earthquakes etc.....
Have fun with it!!!
