having some issue with mouth taping

Post by nobody » Mon Apr 13, 2009 1:53 pm

I'm having some issues with the blue masking tape. When I turn the humidifier on, even on just 1, after a couple of hours the tape becomes moist and stops sticking so I end up waking up with a stream of air coming out my lips.

Also, air swallowing, I wake up in the night and burp it out. No big deal, except if my lips are taped it ends up going up my nose and sometimes burns my nose. I don't think this is too good.

Any ideas? Chin strap doesn't seem to work too well for me because even with my teeth fully together, air still goes out my lips!! I also want to stay with the simplicity mask. Not only does the cushion last MUCH longer than that of the quattro (meaning it's much cheaper to use), but I like it far better than any mask I've tried, and I've tried a lot of them.

Nobody.......

I use 2" Blue 3M Delicate Release painter's Tape.

I don't use a chin strap to keep my mouth closed.....BUT, I do use a "leg" of panty-hose tights....on TOP of the tape (to help prevent "blow-outs"). It swounds like you are experiencing "blow-outs" that are wetting the tape....with either breath moisture or saliva.

The gentle adhesive is very comfortable during removal...but, it needs a little help to stay in place. That's what the panty-hose tights are for. The tights add pressure on top of the tape....to assist the adhesive.....to help prevent "blow-outs".

The band goes over the tape...back under the ears...to the back of my head. In addition, I've added a "stabilizer band" that attaches just ahead of an ear....goes over the top of the head....and attaches just ahead of the other ear.

Instead of trying to sew the panty-hose-tights, you might use super-glue....or hot-glue....to build the loops that you need. The fabric is so soft and stretchy that it doesn't sew easily.

My system works great.....and I can find no way to improve on it.

Hope this helps.....

Gerald

Have you tried polident strips? From what I've read they don't work for everyone, but for me (and my son) they've been a godsend. No tape or marks to worry about.

It does take some practice to get it just right. You wet your lips, and place one (some need 1 1/2) between your lips and firmly close. Keep clamped for a few minutes, and voila. If it does not stick, either fan your lips if too wet, or re-wet if too dry and clamp again. You can open your lips if needed, I've found it just takes conscious effort. In the beginning I went through several the first night until I got it right.

Sometimes a bit messy to remove in the morning, but I'm betting the tape's not all that great either!

I've been using Nexcare flexible clear tape made by 3M.
The hospital name is 3M Transpore surgical tape.
It's pretty secure and comes off fairly easily.

Brushy.........

You're right about the panty-hose difficulties many of us faced....It was tough.

However, as per Rested Gal......panty-hose ain't good enough.

"Panty-hose-TIGHTS" is what we're supposed to use. The material is softer....and stretchier.....better stuff to wear and work with.

Do not doubt Rested Gal....the "mother superior" of this forum. "Whacked knuckles" (and a high AHI) is the fate that awaits those who don't follow her gentle suggestions.

A related question...do you "tapers" have any problem with your cheeks getting blown up like a balloon? That's what I experience when I try taping my lips shut. Worse...my cheeks keep inflating and deflating! Is that something you get used to? I did manage to take a nap this afternoon with the tape on, so I guess it's doable, but tonight it's back to a chin strap.

You need to read the post by rooster that has been linked repeatedly in these taping threads. Your problem is not humidity from the machine, it is your own drool. The tip is to suck your lips waaaaay in before you tape. When you release your lips after taping, you'll find there isn't room for so much as a drop of anything to get through, if you did it right.

Sounds like acid reflux to me, given that it burns your nose. Take any of the various acid reducers available OTC before you go to bed.

In that case it would also happen when I have the humidifier off. Since it doesn't happen when I have the humidifier off, logically, it is because of the humidifier.

I stick my tongue on the roof of my mouth behind my top teeth. Doesn't always stay there, but it mostly works.

Well, despite what may seem logical or not, you might want to give this a try for a few nights...
DeVilbiss IntelliPap Std Plus with Smartflex; Transcend miniCPAP & Everest2 w/humidifier & batt for travel. UltraMirage FFM; PadACheeks; PaPillow. Using straight CPAP at 13.0/passover humidifier. AHI consistently < 1.5. Began CPAP 9/4/08.
