Oh No! Another what CPAP Machine Thread
Ok, I was just titrated last night, barely slept, was bugged by the nasal mask irritating the area below my nose and freaked out by opening my mouth and having the air blow through my throat. So, I bet the results they got were pretty sparse. In that case, I would like to have a machine that can keep track of the data and perhaps Auto-titrate, if the results of the sleep study are "murky".
My Father in Law has a Resmed AutoSet Vantage and loves it. He can travel with it, etc.
I want to ask for the new Resmed Auto Set II that is supposed to be much quieter than his Vantage.
Is this the right plan? Is there something better than this model?
Thanks

ResMed users will say "yes", Respironics users will recommend the REMstar M Series Auto w/A-Flex and Puritan Bennett users will recommend the 420E Auto.
It never hurts to have an Auto because it gives you more options.
Good luck in your decision.

Yep, that is going to be a big issue for me. They titrated me with a nose mask and it irritated the area below my nose (I have a goatee...not sure if that had anything to do with it.
With a full face mask do you get the rushing of air through your mouth as with the nose mask? I imagine not.
Also, can someone give me a quick pro/con of ResMed S8 Series II v. Respironics?
Thanks for putting up with the newb questions

rushing through the mouth
A full face mask will eliminate the rushing through the mouth, but no point in breathing through the mouth to start with. Your therapy is best when the air is going through the nose. Get in the habit of resting your tongue against the roof of your mouth. Problem solved. With a full face mask do you get the rushing of air through your mouth as with the nose mask? I imagine not.
Your goatee might preclude using a full face mask.
Good luck on your "journey". It takes a long time but it is worth it.

Pro/Cons for Resmed S8 Autoset II vs Respironics auto m-series with A-flex
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These are the two latest models
------------------------------------
I can think of a few differences between the machines, I'm sure there's more, but I can only think of these at the moment. They are:
1. The Respironics has a power brick separate from the main machine
2. The Resmed has the power built in the machine - i.e. no power brick
3. The Respironics has a washable foam filter (which will last longer as you can reuse it after cleaning it) & a disposable non washable optional fine filter.
4. The Resmed has only 1 filter and you cannot reuse or clean it (not washable), you have to throw it out and buy a new one
5. The Respironics & Resmed both have computer software & card reader, and the previous nights results on the control panel / lcd
6. My Resmed has details such as Pressure, Leak, AHI, AI, HI. When I was scrolling through it (I think it was in the clinical menu), I could cycle between day, month & year, but I don't know what that means yet.
7. Both have exhale pressure relief. The Respironics has A-flex & C-flex The Resmed has easybreathe and EPR
My comments about the Resmed:-
---------------------------------------
I have the Resmed S8 II Autoset and I love it. The USA model (S8 Autoset II) has EPR in straight CPAP and Auto CPAP mode. The Australian model (S8 II Autoset Spirit) does not have EPR in Auto, only in straight CPAP mode.
Easybreathe (which cannot be turned off) feels good to me
EPR (which can be turned off & you also can select the levels which are 1, 2, and 3) also feels good to me too.
Both easybreathe and EPR make breathing out easy for me (I am using a full face mask). Each feels different, but they are both good. I cannot hear the machine, it is very quiet. The only thing I can hear is the air rushing through my mask.
I am not sure, as I am a newbie, but I think EPR on and off gives different results in the AHI, HI, AI etc as I got different results in the 'efficacy data' with EPR on for 1 night, and then off for the other night. I guess the next thing I want to learn is how to 'tweak it' properly to get the best results for me. First I have to find out what AHI, HI, AI & Leak mean. I know what 'Pressure' means.
I have not tried the respironics, so I cannot comment on how that one feels.
Why don't you rent both, not for a long time just for a couple of days each (which won't cost too much) just to see which one you like the best.

Respironics BiPAP Auto M w/humidifier
I've been on BiPAP since Nov 2007. I used my first Auto M for 2 months until our insurance changed & I turned in my first machine.
We've had to work with a different DME since January and have since been through 3 Respironics. None of the card readers would work.
I'm waiting to get my 4th machine in 7 months, and the sleep doc has written a prescription to change machines because of the warranty issues.
I'm looking forward to not hearing the Resmed as I understand they're very quiet.

Just a correction with #5......data IS available from the LCD for the previous night.nightmares wrote:Pro/Cons for Resmed S8 Autoset II vs Respironics auto m-series with A-flex

SHUCKS! No one gave me any excuse to "pan" the M Series! Doggone it!
I'was first provided w/a Resmed S8 Elite w/EPR and loved it. It got me started on CPAP therapy and went thru all the "mask issues" w/me. Then I got "auto fever" and bought brand new Resprionics pre-M Series Auto w/C-Flex. I got good therapy w/it but I missed the easier to access and more data available via the Resmeds' LCD so I bought a lightly used Resmed S8 AutoSet Vantage. Loved it. But then I was brought back in for bi-level titration (I have COPD) and was switched to the Resmed VPAP Auto bi-level which came out in January. It has the EasyBreathe technology which I really do love. All of my Resmeds have have quiet. Now they've come out w/the new Resmed S8 II VPAP Auto the firt of this month which uses the new Humidaire 4i humidifier which I understand has greater capacity than the Humidaire 3i AND the Respironics M Series integrated humidifier. Did I mention, I LOVE my Resmeds and their EASY access to so much data via the LCD screen?

someday science will catch up to what I'm saying...
You know what I have trouble UNDERSTANDING about that statement that the Resmeds won't respond to an apnea aove 10 cm of pressure - is WHY do they have the capacity to produce up to 20 cms of pressure and IF your titrated pressure is above 10 to begin with - why would you even use CPAP if your pressure need is above 10 cms?

http://www.SMRTSLEEP.COM .... These guys are great, they have over 30 years experience and it shows. Mike and Neil were very helpful throughout the whole process and I now have a great fitting mask and I love my S8 Elite. I was able to talk to Mike who is a certified sleep therapist before I ever bought anything and it was free of charge. I know that they were doing it to earn me as a customer and well, it worked. Their prices were right there with everybody else’s and definitely recommend them to anyone who is looking for a cpap, mask, or supplies; they have earned my business for life. Check them out, pretty nice website with a lot of info and a nifty quiz... http://WWW.SMRTSLEEP.COM

mluciano, are you aware that CPAP.com (owners of this great message board) sell cpap equipment and will match the price if you find something cheaper at another online store?
That's nice that you're happy with where you've been buying things.
A lot of people are happy with the low prices and great service they get from CPAP.COM -- and with the fact that cpap.com makes such a helpful message board as this available.

Yep, I know, Den. I noticed his "ad" posts in other threads. That's why I decided to finally compose a message mentioning cpap.com's price matching policy and sponsorship of this wonderfully informative message board. Two things that a lot of genuine new people aren't always aware of.
My message wasn't really for him. It was for them...the people who sincerely are here to look for help or offer help to others.
