Swift II - Vents noisy?

Post by Needsdecaf » Tue Apr 15, 2008 12:10 pm

Well, I brought home my new machine today to start treatment. Just for kicks, I thought I'd set it up and try it out for a minute or two before going back to work.

Well, I was kind of alarmed at how loud my masked seemed to be venting. Even at only 4 cm, my low ramp pressure, it seemed like I was getting a lot of whistling out of the vent. I do not remember the vent whistling this much when I did my Sleep Study.

For those of you who have used this mask and others, is this one particularly noisy? Could the whistle be coming from leaks around my nose? I wouldn't think so...I am using the same pillow size as during my study, and the tech there told me my leak was almost non-existant.

Help!

And yes, I read through the collective wisdom!

Hi---YEP--that is the same problem I have with the Mirage Swift II Nasal Pillows. I tried the small and the medium pillows--still makes lots of noise and it leaks. I thought it was because I was a side sleeper. I even used the plumber's tape on the ends to see if that would stop the air noise---it is noisy and leaks --and it is a pretty expensive mask!! I do lile the head gear as there is nothing on your forehead --but I have tried these pillows a few times and no luck. Ended up fighting with the Mirage at night so I gave up and threw them into the back of the closet. I use the COMFORT GEL in Petite size now--works GREAT!!

I have the original Swift pillows. Supposedly, the Swift II is less noisy. I hope so because the original is quiet loud and difficult to keep from leaking. However, I too like the headgear because of its stability. I also have a F&P Opus 360. The Opus pillows are more comfortable, but I can't keep the headgear from moving around. (I'm a side sleeper.)
I also have a Quattro FF. I'm trying to gradually accustom myself to a ff because I do some mouth breathing.

Well, an update. I had been using the medium pillows, which is what I used during the test. I know that during the test I had a lot of leakage, because I ended up wearing the mask BACKWARDS. Long story, don't ask. But despite that, my leak rate was low enough to qualify as acceptable according to the fancy-pants machine.

Today using the medium pillows I experienced the whistling. I couldn't tell if it was leaking or just aggressive venting.

Well, tonight I dragged out the nasal mask and tried it out. Not too bad and quiet as a church mouse.

But hey, I have this fancy pants nasal pillow system and it's really the way to go since I'm a nose breather. So on a lark, I decide to try the small pillows.

Silence. Now, all I hear is the machine.

Yippee!!!!

I had a whistling problem with the Bravo when I first used it.
Turned out the vent had debris in it - excess plastic from manufacturing.
Once I cleaned that out, it was fine.

Unfortunately, IMO its not significantly less noisy, only "a bit" less noisy!

Cheers,

Bill

I used the swift I and now use the swift II, much quieter with the II, IMO. It hardly makes noise at all. As for leaks and whistling, use some saline gel around your nostrils, it will help form a better seal. Also, do not pull your straps too tight.

ETA: glh, I have 2 brand new, never used pillows for the Swift I, I think size L and size S. If you need or want either of those, I'd be happy to send them to you. I hate to toss them out, I would rather give them to someone who would use them. Just PM me.

YEP---it is noisy so let me know when you find a "cure" for that --I would love to be able to wear mine as I am a nose breather too --plus a side sleeper!!

The Swift 11, like any other mask is in choosing the right size pillows, adjusting the straps just right, and the Ayr's gel applied to your nostrils. what I have done is marked the straps with white out marker once a fit is good so that after cleaning and taking it apart I can always go back to good fit and good sleep. Another thing as long as the straps aren't to tight the leakage on its sides should be minimal and you should have good sleep.

noisy Swift ll

Post by vesselpessel » Wed Apr 16, 2008 5:18 pm

When I switched from the Swift i to the II I experienced a lot of new whistling sounds. I brought this subject up a an AWAKE meeting. One of the DME's there told me that this was a known defect in the Swift II mask and that the manufacturers were aware of it. I called my DME (Apria) and told them about it and asked for new Swift II. They sent me one and it's perfectly quiet.

Played around a bit more with this tonight. Here's the problem....this thing is noisy. The vent makes quite a bit of whistling noise. Not much to do.

However, I did discover the reason why sometimes it sounded worse. To assemble this mask, you slide a rectangular clip over the front side of the nosepiece. This clip surrounds the vent holes. If you don't slide the clip on just right, it blocks a couple of the vent holes on the end. Man, does this make a racket compared to what it normally sounds like.

Yup, ya gotta have that clip on perfectly straight. I've knocked mine off-center during the night and awoke to LOUD whisting noises. Just put a finger and thumb to it and re-center it. Back to sleep, no problemo.

I paid close attention last night and my Swift II makes zero noise. The only noise I hear is myself breathing and the swish from the machine 2ft away. Maybe there is a batch that is defective?

Maybe so. When I go to my DME to get another mask, I'll ask if they have a swift that I can try for comparison.
