fiancee complaining about noise

Post by miggity » Wed Mar 26, 2008 5:08 pm

I have what I think is a fairly quiet machine --- the Respironics M Series with A-Flex. Whatever noise it does make certainly doesn't bother me. But my fiancee is being awoken by the noise it makes. She says most of the noise is coming from the mask, and that when she looks over to see whether it's leaking, it does not appear to her to be leaking since it's firmly in my nostrils, etc.

I'm wondering what I might do to reduce the nuisance to her. It would be a shame to have to sleep separately before we're even married!

when i did my sleep study, i did try different masks, but was looking for the most attractive one at the time/ least scary looking ---- which i thought was the nasal pillows, Mirage Swift II. that seemed to fit ok for me, so that's what i went with.

When I had my Swift II, it would come off my nostrils fairly often. You need to try a different mask..

kayfouroh, how do you like the mask you have now? Is it something that's good for side sleepers/ mouth breathers/ leakers?

I use a Swift II also. I'm a side sleeper and it works well for me. It shouldn't be noisy. I have the same machine and the only noise I hear is a soft shush. My mask itself makes no noise. One thing I've noticed is that if the nasal pillow gets dislodged, there will be a rushing air sound, kinda loud. I use Ayr nasal gel all around my nostrils and it helps to seal the pillows and make it more airtight.

I have two. I have a full face mask (F&P HC431), which my girlfriend doesn't want me to use around her so I can't commend on the noise for your fiance, but she loves the Nasal Aire II since it is small and unobtrusive, although it is louder than the Swift II I had before. I would say my FC431 is more mouth breathing/side sleeping friendly since it has a whole head interface, while the Nasal Aire II only has the headband and the tubing itself, which comes unlodged quite often in the night when I shift.

Noisy mask

Post by kteague » Wed Mar 26, 2008 7:09 pm

Hi. Any chance your vented air sometimes hits the top sheet? When I had a sleep study with not my usual mask it kept waking me up when that happened. Since my Headrest vents upward and is positioned higher, that's not a problem. While I think it is a quiet mask (since I changed to large pillows and strap it up firm against my nose) I've read on here that some think it's noisy.

I doubt that eyeballing a mask would spot a leak. Maybe next time it happens she can try to feel for air (besides the vent). If she can invest a little time now it may save her some sleep in the long run if you two can pinpoint the source of the sound.

Some white noise in the room might help, like a small fan near her head. Earplugs for a while might be another option. If only a slight muffling is needed, maybe cotton balls, since the packing could be reduced for gradually getting used to the sounds. I'm sure she's frustrated right now (you know how it feels to have poor sleep), but the sounds should become familiar soon. But if it's a leak, that you'll have to figure out a solution.

Good luck.

Kathy

Make sure tha the little plastic bar that holds together the rubber pillows piece (at the bottom of the mask) is well centered. Otherwise it will leak and make quite some noise.

Make sure the joint where the flexible hose goes into the centerpiece is tight. Swifts have been known to leak there. My first one would if I laid on it wrong. Some have used plumbers teflon tape to tighten it up.

Consider a Headrest. Mine works better for side sleeping then the Swift and the exhaust blows back over the top of your head. I think the overall noise level is about the same but I don't hear it as much. But then it never bothered me or my wife in the first place.

I agree that she'll soon get to the point where she doesn't even hear it. Go without it for a night and give her a good dose of snoring!

I found it to be the noisiest mask I've tried, so anything else (apart from ear plugs) should be better.

Masks are pretty individual and noise can be perception. I usually use a headrest which some say is very noisy and I'd kind of agree with that, but compared to what?? I have to wear earplugs because the person sleeping next to me snores so loudly the windows rattle (slight exaggeration ). The ComfortGel is a bit quieter and so is the HC431 (FF)....I just got a NAII and it seems much noisier than the headrest, but only because of the exhaust ports....

I certainly wouldn't choose one for "looks"....ain't one made that's very sexy so give up on that notion!!!! What you want is function. Nothing else!!!!
If she wants you to be healthy, she'll learn to deal with the slight noise the apparatus makes......(I'm sure it's not as noisy as your snoring was!!! )

cheers

I use the F&P 431 - its comfortable and quiet. My wife has never been disturbed by it.
