Misc things to buy (cleaner, pillow, hose cover, etc)

Post by HelpMeBreath » Sat Mar 08, 2008 4:16 pm

I am going to do some retail therapy today and buy some accessories that I have been looking at, but I am wondering if its money well spent or stupid.

I am going to buy spray or wipes for the mask, I am rushed in the morning so the least amount of work I need to do is good. Do you find these sprays and wipes are effective?

Also, most important is a pillow, I currently have fluffy down pillows and I am wondering if one of these sleep apnea pillows would help me, if so, is there a preference? I just want to make sure its not just a gimmick. I am training myself to be a side sleeper so Im looking at one of those pillows that has the notches on the sides, is this good?

THe last thing I am wondering about and this is a gimmick , but I would like to know if there is a way to scent the humidifier safely. I would like something menthol smelling, like vicks, does anyone know if this is ok to do? The last thing I want to do is put more garbage in my lungs than I already do.

Not sure where I will be buying them, I usually buy everything in life from Amazon because I get it in a day or two, but if someone else has it cheap and fast I'll gladly give them my money.

For scents for your humidifier, you shouldn't put anything in the water. Instead, try Pur-Sleep scented oils. Check it out here:

I use the wipes and I think they work fine. I do wash with Baby shampoo whin I have time and feel like it.

Don't know about the pillow. Some people really like the PAP Pillows. I use my same pillow (I think it is down, have to ask my wife to make sure). Kind of a preference thing.

Don't put anything in your humidifier. Purr Sleep has sents that you put on a pad at the inlet to your machine. They help me.

Try cpap.com for your Items. They are very fast. I can order one day by 3p,m, and it will be on my doorstep by 10 a.m. the next day, but I am only 125 miles from them.

PAPillow is very good. Squishy pillows that allow your head to sink 'way in are bad about pushing the mask around and should be avoided. PAPillow is firm but comfortable.

What Jerry said about scents and cpap.com.

I'm cheap, I just wash mask either in the morning when I wash my face or at night when I wash my face. No problem and takes no time at all. I use Kirks Castile soap, which I have used forever and love Then I take the mask parts and put the opening thru a plastic coat hanger on the shower rod. Works great for all over drying.

I don't need a hose cover at this point.

I also have down pillows and have found no need to buy another one. Mine is a queen size and I have not had any mask problems using it.

I also force myself to sleep on my side because the pressure requirements are much lower than on my back. I tried a few specialty pillows, including a Papillow, and eventually went back to a standard soft synthetic down pillow.

My suggestion would be to stay with your fluffy down pillow until you have adjusted to the cpap therapy some more. If you continue to think a different pillow would help then you can start experimenting with some specialty pillows. My opinion is that it takes trial and error to find a specialty pillow you like. The Papillow seems to be the most popular one but I tried it and did not like it.

Good luck.

PurSleep is good stuff. I love Clear, its very pepperminty, but I think has vanilla in it to soften it just a bit. I really can't sleep without that scent now, its like my brain associates that with sleeping.

I also have the Snuggle Hose cover and can't believe I went 2yrs without one. It makes the hose so much more comfortable under the covers with me. Saline gel is another must for me.

I use Ivory original dish soap to wash my nasal pillows and hose. It takes me about 30sec to wash the pillow. I do the hose on Saturdays, I do have a spare hose so the wet one can hang up to dry all week and I can get the Snuggle hose cover back on before bedtime.

I don't use any cpap type pillow, I have a memory foam pillow that I like very much.

Hi There, My suggestion would be to stay with your fluffy down pillow---that is what I use---in a queen size and I also have a king size one. SOme times I stack them or make L shape out of them. YES---my hubbie calls it --me, making my "nest" for sleep!!

I use the Dr. Bonner liquid soap in Peppermint to clean the masks. You can get it for like 4 dollars at High Health stores. Baby Shampoo works too ---

The snuggle hose cover is AWESOME!! Money well spent----like the other person said--it makes it nicer when you have the hose under your blanket if it is covered in a really nice fleece.
Good LUCK!!!

Here's another vote for keeping your down pillow. I can punch and poke mine and find just the shape I need for side or back sleeping.

Rx's necessary for treatment?

Post by Capri » Sun Mar 09, 2008 1:27 am

I am confused. When I need an antibiotic, I have to get a Rx from my doctor. I have OSA, so my doc gave me a Rx for a CPAP machine. How is it then that we can freely purchase and sell xPAP equipment? Does the government just turn a blind eye? I went on to purchase a card reader, software, pulse oximeter and software, new mask, etc. etc. Tonight if I felt like it (and had money to throw around!) I could buy a BiPAP machine and set my own pressure with no Rx. Am i breaking the law? Trust me - I am all for full availability of CPAP (or any other lifesaving medical equipment). How do the rest of you interpret this situation? I'm not reading anything about it here on cpap.talk

Cheers!

Me, too! I'm developing quite a collection of stuff, masks, humidifiers, machines . . . and, it's all good, I actually enjoy rotating things around occasionally, trying different combinations. Thinking that one day my children will be able to create a CPAP museum with all of dad's old stuff :<)

Re the FlexFit, it's too late for me--I bought one, tried it on, took it off, sold it at cpapauction.com

You're the first person I've ever heard of who thinks of buying CPAP accessories as retail therapy! For me, it's buying a sharp new outfit, or if I need extra heavy duty therapy, a new ipod, bicycle, or laptop. For my wife, it's buying a new Coach handbag or at least wallet, or new clothes. Your retail therapy is healthier than ours, and less expensive! Not sure my wife (who doesn't have OSA or use CPAP) would be willing to try it, tho.

Yeah, I've been wondering about this, too. I got the email from cpap.com a few months ago advertising their new wipes. Sounds like a great time-saver!

I've been intrigued by the Papillow and wanted to try it. However, it's expensive and there's no return option at the retailers I've checked, and as far as I can tell, half of the folks who try it don't like it. Right now, if there's not a good chance I'll like a product like that, I can't afford to take the chance on it (because, of course, of all the bills I'm still trying to pay for all my retail therapy!)
