Re: I QUIT
You're obviously on the WRONG forum! All the "quitters" are over on the ASAA forum.Anonymous wrote:I QUIT!!!!

The successful PAP users hang out here.
I did a search on your "user name" and it didn't show up.....so you probably have never registered here or tried to get help for your therapy.
Ultimately, it's YOUR therapy. You can quit if you want.....nobody can force you to do it.
I just hope you don't drive the highways I travel.

Could be an "older" person who's throwing a temper tantrum. Always makes me wonder what they would have said to their kids if they would have said the same thing about a serious medical situation......???
Kinda hard to feel sorry for idiots. Could also be a "troll".....they seem to show up on the forums and do this quite frequently.

Quitting CPAP
I understand you feeling like that, just don't know what you hope to accomplish with that approach. If you think CPAP treatment is unbearable, the alternative is no picnic. You say you're quitting C CRAP, well maybe you've had a crappy machine, mask, and/or support thusfar, so by all means do quit C CRAP. Not the same thing as quitting CPAP, a lifesaving treatment for a life threatening problem.

QUITING IS NOT AN OPTION
We keep getting these post from time to time as if CPAP treatment is optional like smoking, drinking or what ever. How could an adult understand the ramifications of untreated SA, and decide to choose not to work to find successful treatment like the rest of us, and drive on. Regards

Re: QUITING IS NOT AN OPTION
Easy---My husband and brother-in-law are two that fit the category, and stubbornly and stupidly refuse to get sleep study. My husband has even been told by the owner of a DME that he should have one done (they've shared a motel room before). They both snore like freight trains, and my husband snorts and stops breathing in his sleep, and many times wakes up coughing, sounding like he's gagging. (We sleep in separate rooms, but you can still hear him with the door closed.)KAZ wrote:<snip>How could an adult understand the ramifications of untreated SA, and decide to choose not to work to find successful treatment like the rest of us...
Now, I don't know about my brother-in-law, but since I've been on cpap for almost a year now, and have definitely discussed the ramifications with my husband, he definitely knows what they are. (May not take them seriously enough, though.)
No amount of being nice, getting mad, etc., works. Start in on the life insurance bit, you know, getting more since he probably will have an early death, and he gets mad and says I'm evil. (He's 54.) Offered to let him use my machine at a low setting for a nap, since I have the software and could get a glimpse of what is happening with him. He wants to use it all night, and therefore I'd be without it. I said no because I'm not sleeping at night without it. (He takes enough naps, so it wouldn't be an issue with the naps.)
Now I'm the one quitting---quitting trying to talk some sense into a husband with a brick wall for a head!
Sorry, I'm finished venting now. KAZ's statement just struck a cord with how stupid some adults are with it comes to their health.
But KAZ, you know what? Now that I reread your statement, and think about what I wrote---maybe they just don't get it somehow. I don't see how they couldn't, especially my husband who lives with a hosehead (me), but maybe he doesn't. How do you, then, get them to realize and understand it, when they seem to have that brick wall for a head and you can't get anything through?
Pam

~ 50% quit
Interestingly, my pulmonologist told me this statistic when I was first dx'd. About half of those given xPAP machines never complete a year.
I was incredulous. Given the serious, nasty, ugly health complications that OSA causes, who wouldn't want to reverse that trend? Given the depressing, murky life of untreated sleep apneics, who wouldn't want to give successful (if inconvenient) treatment their best shot, and then some?
But then, I need to temper that thought with a firsthand understanding of the rationales of someone in the mental grips of OSA. So, summoning a bit of compassion is easy through that dark lens.
Now, I just hated CPAP when I first put that mask and headgear on. I resolved to make it work, however, and before long, I adapted, and in a few more weeks, my PAP was now a close friend.
Perhaps if Guest Stan returns to the forum and explains his issues, some of the pappian veterans can help him out.
So, STAN, c'mon back and help us help you.

I QUIT responding to idiots who like to stir up CRAP.
Honest frustration is welcome here.
Temper tantrums and juvenile antics . . .
Leave 'em somewhere else on the internet.

Re: ~ 50% quit
I can understand it entirely. I started CPAP about 4 months ago, and was given a machine out of the box with no support, and very little in the line of instructions. I tried it and managed to sleep through with the mask from my second night, and the only night since then that I have missed was when we had a power failure.Captain_Midnight wrote:Interestingly, my pulmonologist told me this statistic when I was first dx'd. BUT.... I am not sleeping properly, and while I have some energy, I am still not sorted out, in fact a long way from it. My AHI is still over 20 most nights, often over 30, and I am still tired during the day. If I didn't find the information and support that I have received here, I would have binned the thing ages ago - even though I had to pay for it myself. Instead of that, I am trying to tweak my settings, and will be getting a data card to get more information out of my machine so that I can get on top of things.
It could have gone either way.
Cheers,
Colin
WearyOne, I've often said that the fact that I came into SA the hard way with complete respiratory failure, two months hospital$400K,trachea tube, learning to walk all over again, etc, made CPAP a piece of cake(with the help of my friends here). I'm as hard headed as your spouse, brother in law,I just had it explained so that even this old Marine could grasp it. Regards
