Grumpy old man

Post by shippy » Sun Apr 01, 2007 8:13 am

I am in my mid fifties, in my younger years (pre forties) i was alway's in a good mood laid back, easy going so to speak, nothing much bothered me, be it work or personal problems. I always had a lot of patience for dealing with people and problems at work in my job as a supervisor. That was up until i hit my mid forties or so. I started developing less tolerance as far as patience and the ability to stay cool under fire so to speak. Little things seem to bother me more now and i am not as nice as i used to be, and react a whole lot different now to problems and people, sometimes being short with comments and being downright mean to employees and others.
I realize now after being diagnosed with OSA late last year that all of these mood swings etc. are the result of being sleep deprived over the years. I thought (before osa diagnosis) as i was becoming older i was just getting grumpier, I sure would like to return to the old laid back me. Wonder how long it will take to make up the lost sleep, don't want to be a grumpy old man.

Dale--I hear ya on this! I just turned 40 and have been a hosehead for going on 4 years. In the years leading up to my diagnosis I felt like I was having a nervous breakdown (probably because I was!) and a large part of that had to do with being so irritable. And now that I've been sleeping every night all night on my cpap my outlook has changed completely. It's hard to describe how much of a difference that's made in my life.

And speaking of grumpy old men, I'm convinced that my grandfather had chronic and undiagnosed OSA for decades. He died in 1999. Recognizing his OSA has helped me understand why he was so grumpy! It makes me wonder how his life would have been been different had he been diagnosed and treated.

Try the Scented CPAP Mask with Pur-Sleep's CPAP Aromatherapy--CPAP Diffuser and Essential Oils.

I was going to mention this in my original post but it was already getting long so i didn't. My dad is now 85 years old and when he hit fifty or so, he couldn't stand to be around kids (such as grandkids etc.) anymore and was always grumpy. He snored a lot too, wondering now if he had and has a sleep disorder.

I don't know how long it will take you but I am pulling for you. Nobody likes us grumpy old men and women, even other grumpy old men and women! Let's get some sleep and start smiling and meaning it!

Ahhh, Shippy. I so understand what you are saying. And wondering. All my life I wandered around w/my rose colored glasses. Then a whiplash in '94 started my sleep problems and somewhere along the line those rose colored glasses got broken, mutilated and lost. I was pretty crochety, not at all like me. By the time I wised up and went on CPAP (Oct '06) I really had a rough time. The first 30+ days w/CPAP I slept even worse than before. I was an absolute witch, welcoming any excuse for a fight.

Thank goodness, those days (and nights) are behind me!!! I actually like myself again. Almost. I still haven't found those rose colored glasses nor their replacement. But I'm close. Hang in there. The real you is still there, its just a matter of time and patience and "tweaking" the pressures, mask fits, etc. Our personalities didn't change for the worse overnight and its gonna take some time to regain what and who we were.

You'll get over it. I did. Tho I still don't have the tolerance I did and am more inclined to speak my piece than I used to be. I'm hoping for a little more subtlty and tact as I get more rested. Tact still isn't my forte. I still admire those who can chop someone off at the knees in a smooth, pleasant way.

Don't forget.......we're ALL getting older. We've seen (and heard) SOOOO much in our lifetimes. We tend to become more cynical and skeptical about things. Many of us grew up during the 40's, 50's and 60's when "life" wasn't quite so complicated.

I don't think we can blame it ALL on OSA. I'm not quite as short-tempered as I was 2 years ago, but I also believe my thinking is clearer now......and I STILL have no tolerance for liars and a$$holes.

Funny, too.....with my newly oxygenated brain, I'm finding MORE of them.

Hey Den, Guess we got lucky we didn't get grumpy in our older years, as did the others. Its a lot like the old cliche when he drinks he gets nasty, when in reality he is not much different sober.
