In 2007 John Goodman (our site/forum sponsor) laid out his expectations for moderating behavior of participants. Rather than repeating that narrative, another contributor neatly summarized it by saying:

All views are acceptable here as long as they are politely and cleanly stated.

I was surprised when a recent thread that I had started ( see: Contributors Qualifications) was locked because of a squabble between two other posters. The reason for closing and locking the thread was because one of the other contributors (not myself) was deemed to be off-topic.

Whether he was off-topic or not is for me to evaluate, but it does seem to be unjust to lock down my thread, because of someone else's actions.

I have always tried to polite and courteous. To the best of my recollection I have never called anyone here"stupid', "idiot", "moron", or impugned their reading ability/comprehension, suggested IQ deficiency, and never used obscene phrases or acronyms like FFS. (However I have observed that when those types of comments are made, it is usually with the strategic intent to eventually derail the discussion)

Don't believe it. Moderating a board costs time and/or money. Those lofty ideals were a smokescreen for being cheap. It wasn't until The Great War for Moderation that some headway was made.

Though I reckon we probably don't have very many members here who are crying this morning because of collateral damage in the aforementioned thread locking. From my PM box contents...mostly applause.

I know that every time I end up locking a thread it's just a temporary throwing of water on the fire because the offenders will go start another thread and start another fire...but at least fire fighting needs are hopefully reduced for a short period of time.

Apparently very short period of time this time.

Some members are just boring, tedious annoyances. Some members are just here to poke at people and stir up trouble and sole purpose in life it to derail threads and make everything all about them....classic trolls.

Figuring out the fine line between the two....major headache and I am just like every other human out there...I have warts and flaws and get short tempered and lash out .....just like every other human out there.

Moderators can't please everyone...impossible job...they can only do the best they can given their own human failings.
Accept it...and move on and quit bitching about it until you have walked in the moderator's shoes.

Collateral damage...yeah, sometimes it happens. Sometimes stopping a war is bloody.

It should come as no surprise that a thread titled "Contributors Qualifications" that was also largely a complaint about posters generalizing negatively about medical professionals would rapidly degenerate into into some kind of pissing contest and become locked.

Was the original intent of your locked thread to determine what qualifications posters hold that permit them to make sweeping generalizations? I think we all know there are no such qualifications. People generalize and will continue doing so. And it is pretty much allowed here.

Those of us who used USENET back in the day, or perhaps even use it today (it's been quite a while since i used it) may be better adjusted to an unfettered exchange. I for one have no problem with the light touch moderation we have here now (Edit - Thanks to Pugsy - Thank You Pugsy!)

Sounds like he thinks he is "ALWAYS RIGHT".... and he has to prove that everyone here is wrong. Hopefully he will leave soon and NEVER return.
He sounds more like that XYYZZZ guy that everyone had to put up with a few years back.

NO! sorry to shout, nana. but if you weren't here then, you don't really know. while dataq1 is tilting at windmills here, he is at least calm and polite.

alphabet boy was loud, snotty and repugnant. even the current crop of "holier-than-thou" forum members would have had nothing to do with him.

his favorite thing to do was call ANYONE who disagreed with him "libtard" regardless of the forum members political affiliation.

while i have dataq1 on my foe list, i'd much rather read what he has to say than what alphabet boy had to say.

(this is by no means an endorsement of dataq1. to the contrary. just sayin'.)

Alphabet boy was in a class of his own. I can count on one hand (I think) the number of members to get banned AND have all their posts removed because they were so badly disruptive to the forum as a whole.
Being tedious or annoying is no where nearly that big of a problem. For that matter neither are some of the trolls we currently have...especially if people simply wouldn't feed the trolls but I know that not feeding the trolls is really easy to say but not so easy to implement.

Which BTW....I wish people would stop pointing out trolls...all it does is give them the attention they desire. They really don't care if the attention is good or bad...all they want is attention.
Quit calling them out...it's not needed anyway....I am pretty sure that most of us here can see who the trolls are anyway.
I don't need anyone pointing them out to me. I can see for myself.
