I was troubled by air filling my mouth and puffing between my lips which disturbed my sleep. I fixed it. No more puffing. I cut a soda straw about in half and cut some slits about 1/2" long in one end. I put that end into my mouth between my jaw and rear teeth and let the straw protrude at the corner of my mouth. I had no puffing last night. I experienced none before I went to sleep and was not awakened a single time. (It took a long time for me to go to sleep because I was waiting to see if a puff would occur and I was excited at the possibility of a fix.)

I tried this straw because I reasoned that if the pressure in my mouth was relieved by passage out of my mouth through the straw before it could build up and produce a puff, that the problem would be eliminated. IT WORKS. TRY IT. Refer to it as JERRY'S NO PUFF FIX.

Jerry69: Do you have a photo of your "straw fix"? I'm having trouble visualizing the fix from the description.

My thoughts as well...
This would be my only concern with using the DIY stent to release the pressure. It's probably not going to be a huge thing but I would want to verify just to make sure.

It is essentially creating a known mouth leak....which may or may not be something worth worrying about.
I know from personal experience that not all mouth leak is massive and in some situations it can be a very minor amount...but I would watch the leak line like a hawk using the straw for a pressure release at least at the beginning for a week or two.

This reminds me of the little mouth vent on Somnifix.
I went to the website for Somnifix and bought one after reading this: "Yes, you can use PureSleep if you breathe through your mouth during sleep as there is a lot of space between the upper and lower components of the device to allow air to freely pass." That's the point of the straw: to allow air that has already leaked into the mouth to pass out of the mouth before it builds up pressure, expands the cheeks, and finally puffs through the lips.

The Somnifix website explains what causes snoring: "During sleep, the muscles surrounding the upper airway relax, allowing the base of the tongue and surrounding soft tissue to move back, against the rear of the upper airway. Air rushing through this narrowed opening causes the soft tissue to “flutter” like a flag in a breeze, producing the snoring sound.

PureSleep is molded to your teeth, allowing it to firmly but gently hold your lower teeth forward of their normal position, relative to your upper teeth. This moves the jaw forward, along with the base of the tongue and surrounding soft tissue.

By holding your jaw forward, the base of the tongue and surrounding soft tissue are also moved forward, away from the back of the upper airway. This widens the upper airway, allowing improved airflow. Since air no longer must rush through the airway, the soft tissue is far less likely to flutter, so there the sound of snoring is therefore dramatically reduced or entirely eliminated." I think this is also when air leaks into the mouth.

Anyhoo, I'm going to try this Somnifix device to see if it is a better way to allow air to escape the mouth than my straw. Certainly more expensive. Maybe it will prevent air leakage into the mouth. The straw can't do that.

The air must escape/leak from the nasal airway before it can be "leaked" out of the mouth, either through a straw or by puffing. The straw doesn't disturb sleep as does puffing. The straw does nothing if their is no leak from the nasal airway, and it doesn't promote this nasal airway leakage.

I checked my leak rate for the two nights I have used the straw, It was very low: 95% leak rate liters/min: Monday, 13; Tuesday, 13; Wed (1st night with straw), 12; Thursday (2nd night with straw), 9. So, the leak rate is not promoted by the straw. I wouldn't expect it to be. The leak has to occur at the base of the tongue before air will enter the mouth. Air flow through the straw or between the lips with puffing only occurs if there is a leak from the airway first.

I'm sorry to report that the soda straw-fix let me down last night. I puffed a couple of times and found that I was getting too much saliva causing me to have to swallow a lot. Maybe I'll try mouth tape. I hope I don't leak because I'll explode if I leak into my mouth. :D
