Issues with noise from exhaust vents: Resmed S9 + Airfit P10

The noise from the air vents (or possibly opening my mouth) is waking my partner up. Are there alternative masks that I can use?

The range in pressure I use is from 4-14. I use the medium sized nose pillows which have a better fit than the small. I've tried lowering the pressure to 12, but I wake up with heart racing (I need the higher pressure).

Is there a correlation between the noise from airflow coming out the exhaust vents and the pressure? Have others observed this?

I am going to try mouth taping, in case the noise is coming from my mouth.


Anyone have this issue, or have solutions? Thank you.

New CPAP user and new to forum. I followed the instructions to input my equipment in the user settings, but the S9 doesn't show up.

As someone who used the P10 for several years....it probably has the most silent of all mask venting systems so I vote for the noise your wife hears either coming from open mouth or maybe mask movement causing a leak that is being heard...maybe bouncing off something.

Try taping your mouth and see if the wife complains still yet...also use OSCAR and lets see if anything exciting shows up on the leak graph.

Hopefully your model S9 is one of the full data models and not the brick model.
When you add your machine to your signature line...be sure to put model name as is shown on your machine. There were probably at least a dozen different S9 models.

Thank you so much, your response is really helpful and supportive. I downloaded OSCAR but am a bit intimidated. I appreciate all the resources here and will look forward to digging in. My Resmed S9 is H5i, do you know how I can check if it is a brick? I know that my doctor is able to pull data from the SD card.

Are there remedies for this? I've seen some hook set ups you can attach to the bed on Amazon, but I don't think they are available to ship to Thailand.

Might also be ramp starting at 4 and going up to fixed at 14 with the brick.
4 to 14 might not equal AutoSet. How many times have people thought that ramp pressures were part of the settings?

Might also be the S9 Escape Auto....it will auto adjust but has no data available.

How do you tell from the label whether you're looking at an S9 Autoset, or an Elite, or an Escape? I recall there was a difference in the model numbers, but there is no model number on the label of either the machine in question, or my current machine.

I am looking at my Oscar data and at the links provided by other users in this thread to interpret the data. At a top level the average AHI is 3.15 which seems good.

RE: The OP: After I started taping my mouth shut, and using a tempurpedic pillow that keeps me on my back, my partner has not noted any noise.

Thank you to everyone. It's been 8 months of getting to this solution, and the solution itself has lots of bumps to smooth over.

That's what doctors consider "good enough" but it's far from good, take 60, divide it by 5 (ahi of 5) you get 12. that's how often, *on average* that your sleep is disturbed by breathing problems.. (probably more often because the AHI only counts two of the four common breathing issues, snoring and flow limitations also disturb sleep and reduce rest).

How often do you want to have someone poking you with a sharp stick all night long?

Here, we like to see AHI's under 2. Mine was 0.3 last time I checked.

What is a number that, in your opinion, I should strive for? What additional steps should I take that I haven't already?

Anything below 1 is pretty much diminishing returns.

My pressures are not very high but I do get some noise from the P10 exhaust vents if anything gets close to it, i.e., the blanket or a pillow gets pulled up near the exhaust vents. The air seems to ricochet off things and make noise/blow in my eyes.

More pressure won't help reduce central apneas.

It's normal to have a few centrals so we don't worry about a few here and there.
If you are having a lot of awake/arousal related centrals then we would advise trying to figure out what is causing the arousal and fix that.
Bear in mind that while the videos below talk mainly about central apneas and arousal false positive flagging...it can happen with any category of event.

So to fix a problem you first have to identify the problem.

My AHI ranges from 1 to 3 most nights. Occasionally I get lucky and it's below 1.0.....but I have a lot of false positives being flagged because I often have "bad" nights in terms of sleep quality from pain issues. Totally unrelated to airway issues.
75 % of my AHI is always false positives and one time it was 95% false positives.
I have seen false positive flagging in the OA and hyponea category....I know it can happen.

Asleep time flow rate is circled in red...anything flagged after the red circle is a false positive.. I wasn't asleep and if I wasn't asleep it doesn't count. More pressure won't fix any of it.
