Inhaling much faster with VAUTO. Why?

Post by Lightweaver » Sat Jul 25, 2020 3:41 pm

Yesterday, I used my VAuto machine for the first time during the night and I felt pretty weird upon waking up. I've noticed that my breathing is much faster with it. I used to have AutoSet for Her, and my inhale time was around 2 seconds. With Vauto, my medium inhale time is barely over 1s.
Any suggestions why am I breathing so fast with VAuto? I used exactly same pressure settings as my AutoSet.

Post some comparitive charts.
Post the settings of two machines.
Did you change any of BiLevel oriented settings?

That's highly unlikely.

What were your settings on the autoset, and what did you set the VAuto to?

as highly unlikely as it is, if that's what you used, then they're the same.

That's not necessarily a problem. What's your median expiratory time? The "normal" ratio is 1:2.

So let's first establish there's an actual problem.

Also, you might post the other settings (Ti, Cycle, Trigger).

That's often a *target* for forced ventilation, it's not something that's significant for someone that's not on a ventilator.

Why I put "normal" in quotes.

My point was simply that the inspiratory number absent other data isn't very meaningful.

I've looked at the stats closer and it looks like respiratory rate only increased a little, but my inhale to exhale ratio has changed from about 1:1 to over 1:3.

On the Autoset, the inhale time is all over, but usually stays well above 1s

With VAuto, it stays at about 1s in a pretty controlled manner.

How does VAuto change the inhalation time, and keep it controlled like so?
Cycle and Trigger are at Med
I increased Ti Max to 4s as I was expecting my inhales to be over 2sec based on previous data, Ti min default.

Your Ti max setting will probably be the issue. What you set this to decides when the machine thinks you should be exhaling.

I had this issue when I got my VAuto and I increased the default Ti max until it felt right. For me it's 2.5 seconds. I left the Ti min as it was. (The default setting for Ti Max is 2.0 which was not long enough for me).

Can I also suggest that you set the Trigger to Very High (detects beginning of inhalation) and the Cycle to Very Low (detects beginning of exhalation. I found the trigger setting to be effective than cycle setting.

The second post is a very good explanation of the settings by Pale Rider.

OP said they already set TiMax to 4.

I'm actually leaning towards erroneous reporting from the autoset, or at least something strange going on over there.

I didn't read that so thanks for pointing it out.

What does a two-minute close up of the flow rate graph look like?

Your respiratory rate is more or less the same. With the VAuto new settings such as Trigger and Cycle are introduced. Try setting the Cycle to "Low" and see if that fixes the problem.

Who says there is a "problem"?
