can't find distilled water? What can I do?

Post by tron7263 » Tue Apr 07, 2020 10:11 am

Hi. I'm in So Cal, USA. For weeks, I have been unable to find any distilled water for my CPAP in stores. In desperation, I bought six small bottles on Amazon for $24 !!!

Does anyone have an idea what I can do?

Thanks.

Use your drinking water...tap or bottled or whatever.

The worst thing that will happen is you get a bit of mineral build up in the water chamber but it is easily removed with a bit of vinegar or lemon juice.

Use *tap water* it's perfectly fine.

This should be a sticky, not that anybody will bother to read it.

welcome to the zoo. distilled water is a convenience, not a necessity. it's recommended so that you avoid mineral build up in the tank.

you'll maybe get more build up with tap water. but keep an eye on your tank. if you see anything scummy, dump out the water, clean the tank and you are good to go.

good luck!

our host has a pitcher that claims to turn tap into distilled water...more or less. i've used that out of laziness.

ResMed has clarified that using Distilled Water is a cleaning convenience and not a health concern.

If/when my tabletop distiller dies, I will readily switch to tap water.
No problem.
I drink it when I'm thirsty.

If you can't convince yourself to use tap water, start using de-ionized water that's dispensed on demand at some grocers like Whole Foods. It's actually "purer" and cheaper than distilled, and as long as the store is open for business and the machine is maintained, there will never be a shortage. You might also try running with no water at all. I never use my humidifier and I don't miss it.

I purchased a home distiller on amazon for around the price of the pitcher that is for sale. Between my CPAP and home humidifier, I was going through 2 gallons a day in the winter.

FYI - I bought a table top water distiller over 4 or 5 years ago on amazon. Have used it ever since. My parents liked it so much they even bought one. They run it for drinking water as the water where they live isn’t good.

CPAP tip of the day:

Get a home distiller. The time you save not having to descale your CPAP humidifier, you can put towards descaling your distiller.
