Help pricing used APAP Machines

Post by johnnyt » Tue Jan 21, 2020 9:03 pm

Hello!
I'm in the market for an APAP machine, I don't have a clear frame of reference as far as pricing and don't want to get ripped off. I've been doing some research on what to look for but not sure about some details like what is considered "low hours". Any red flags to look for when looking at used devices? I do know to avoid the CPAP version of the resmed so I'm looking specifically for a resmed autoset 10 or autoset 10 for her. I know new are $883, and used I've seen around~$400-500 but how would i know by how much to adjust the price estimate depending on the hours it has? Basically any pricing tips welcome.

A little about me: I've been suffering from brain fog for the past 4 years, and I think could be linked to some sort of apnea or sleep disorder. I have seen many doctors and have ruled out many other possible causes (reddit post below if you care to read). had a take home sleep study done, was very uncomfortable and slept maybe ~5hrs and dr said not likely apnea. Lately I've realized how I don't sleep through the night most nights. I usually wake up, sometime to pee but most times I just wake up and don't know why. I have lots of dreams most nights and I usually remember them. I don't have any significant source of stress and most nights I sleep ~8 hours. Some feedback I got from my reddit post pointed me back to sleep apnea, my plan is to get a used apap machine and try it out, if it helps great! if not I'll sell it and keep exploring other culprits.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Low hours is typically less than 2000 hours. Make sure to review the Run Hours as it is like the odometer on a car. It is a bit harder to find.

Try to stay under 2000hrs unless you come across a very good deal. Preferably, try to stay under 500hrs as a number of people get them but never use them.

There are coupons, bundle deals(machine+mask) , one day specials and my favorite 'open box' discounts. Lot's of manufacturers impose restrictions on what prices may be advertised. Lots of clever businesses find ways to offer the merchandise for less than what they can openly advertise.

On used avoid anything coming from a smoking environment unless you don't mind the smell of cigarette smoke. Even the tiniest odors are magnified when they are being pumped through your nose.

I think on the used cpap market, you're ideally looking for a machine that someone used for a few weeks, or months, and then gave up on, so that total hours are in the hundreds.

You can get autosets like that here, on the boards, or on craigslist, etc. for maybe $300-500; sometimes even lower.

I have bought many of my masks and parts from them. Wouldn't hesitate to buy a machine from them.

Thanks everyone for the replies very helpful! So it sounds like 1-2k hrs is a good range (6 months * 30 days * 8hrs/day == 1440hrs) and pricing is ~$300-500. or ~$620 or less for open box or with coupons. I'll PM LSAT and see what he has.

Also, thanks harrywr2 for pointing out the smoke smell, I will look for it i have an extremely sensitive nose...

So many hours do these machines usually have for end of life?

Make sure you smell the machine, both running and not running.

Don't just smell for cigarette smoke, but also look for smells that might be masking unpleasant doors.

Sounds good! just picked up an autoset 10 off ebay, ~1400hrs for about $250 including shipping (possibly seemed like a good price...maybe... :? ). Seller said it was from a pet free smoke free home but I'll be sure to look for any off smells.

Is there a specific replacement hose I should get? is a generic vs resmed brand comparable? Also I am looking to try the nasal pillows, any brand/type that is preferable?

Lastly, I read on another post that the machine itself shouldn't be cleaned is that accurate? I am planning on replacing the filter right away and soaking the humidifier tank in vinegar/water mix for a while.

I really appreciate all the help since I don't know much about any of this, just what I've researched.

Thanks

Any hose is fine, unless you want a heated one, in which case it has to be a Resmed Climateline Air.

There are instructions in the back of the clinical manual for reprocessing between patients, follow those.
