Need help with using system one cpap with 12v deep cycle battery

Post by nameuser » Mon Feb 11, 2019 10:37 am

Hi, after my generator failed to work in a power blackout, I decided to use deep cycle 12v battery.
After reading, I know that there is a special adapter for that, but I can't buy it in my country.
So I thought to just use alligator clips with cigarette socket Image
then connect a cigarette adapter with the plug that PSU uses such as this: Image
of course I will change the fuse to 8A (or 10A) and check for polarity with a multimeter, but the output voltage will be similar to the battery, that means the cpap will get sometimes 13.6v sometimes 13.2V and not exactly 12v, will that matter? can someone who own one of the original car adapter, measure the Voltage in the socket and in the output of the adapter to see if it regulate the voltage to be exact at 12v?
I don't want to damage the unit.

Thanks in advance!

That's what it's designed for, just make sure you don't clip the connectors to the wrong battery terminals.

It depends on what type of machine you have.

For example if you have a Resmed AirXxxxx 10 line of machines you need to use their 24V DC converter.

Title says 'system one' (previous generation philips respironics)

That's the thing... the plug on the last picture is just adapter from cigarette socket to the plug that's connect to the cpap, that cost around $3.
this one is cost at least 10 times as much and have these 2 cylinder bumps which might be ferrite beads but I am not sure, maybe it also regulate voltage to exactly 12v:

my question is basically simple, will my respironics system one, that uses 12v 6.67A power adapter, can be connected directly to battery without damaging it?
or it have to be regulated to exactly 12v 6.67A with this "special" respironics cable?

No problem - I've run a Respironics System One (560) for months at a time connected directly to a 12V battery bank the varied between 11.8 and 12.6 with no problem. I've also run from a battery connected to a charger so the voltage was higher, about 14.2. In general, devices with a "cigarette lighter" plug should be able to handle between 11.5 and 14.5 volts without a problem.

I do unplug when I'm not using the pump to avoid the chance of stray voltages, but using a battery when nothing else is connected should have no risk at all.

It doesn't regulate the voltage. The ferrites are to cut down on any electrical noise picked up in the cable, or radiated from the cable.
