Use CPAP for naps?
The guy in the medical supply company who sold me my CPAP machine told me that if I wasn't planning on sleeping at least 4 hours that there was no point in using the CPAP. It seems to me that if my brain is being deprived of oxygen while I'm asleep that I should always use it. Or not?

Re: Use CPAP for naps?
The guy is an idiot - it needs used for each and every time you are asleep. Think about your untreated ahi, that still applies even for a 30 minute nap - and the point of a nap is a pick me up to feel better from - so it needs to be restful.

Re: Use CPAP for naps?
Once you get used to using cpap you will not want to ever sleep w/o it, even for 10 mins. What the idiot DME is confusing is compliance hours, which need to be an avg of >4 hrs. each day for 30 consecutive days at least 70% of the time. What he has failed to understand is that (esp. while getting used to sleeping this way) if you used the cpap for say 3.5 hrs you can indeed use it for a nap of say 45 min to an hour or so to make up the needed 30 min for you 4hr daily compliance avg.projecttoday wrote:It seems to me that if my brain is being deprived of oxygen while I'm asleep that I should always use it. Beware of more bad info coming from this very inexperienced DME.
Re: Use CPAP for naps?
A lot of patients don't use it for naps, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't. It's reasonable to assume (and unreasonable to assume otherwise) that the same episodes that affect your nighttime sleep also affect your mid-day naps.
For the record, I generally take Saturday afternoon naps and I always make sure to use my CPAP.
Why a DME would tell you otherwise is beyond me.

Too bad (s)he doesn't have better training. Note also that using the machine for a one-hour nap plus for three hours at night is theoretically "compliant."Guest wrote:its the 4hr compliance confused mindsetD H wrote:Why a DME would tell you otherwise is beyond me.
Four hours is a bare minimum for compliance, not a goal. The goal should be the entire time that you sleep, naps and all. Typically, this should be from seven to nine hours. Perhaps it will be even more for new patients who haven't slept well in years.

Four hours is a bare minimum for compliance (as formulated by medicare and copied by most private insurance in the U.S.), not a goal. The goal should be the entire time that you sleep, naps and all. well, you're right to question that, because it's bullshit.
question anything else that idiot told you, and complain to his management.

Re: Use CPAP for naps?
well, the only other way to interpret 120% is that you use it (assuming 8 hours sleep) for an additional 1.6 hours while not sleeping.Guest wrote:alright meathead 230% for mepalerider wrote:so, 4.8 hours a day, 84% of the time?Guest wrote:That is indeed the best advice. "compliant" is such an ugly word, anyway. "do what you're told (and get inadequate treatment)".
just use it whenever you're going to sleep, every time, always.
