Injury caused by CPAP; has there ever been even one?

Post by D.H. » Fri Sep 09, 2016 7:46 pm

I have been using CPAP for over seventeen years and have never seriously thought about such a thing.

However, I have a friend who was more recently been diagnosed and very much worries about this. He especially worries about suffocating if the power fails, the unit fails, or the hose becomes obstructed or disconnected.

He also worries about electrocution, fire caused by CPAP, fumes from the motor, or other unspecified mishaps.

If somebody can assure me that this never happened, perhaps I can put his mind at ease.

Masks have anti-asphyxiation valves - I never had a problem when the power went out.

Unless he plans to take it into the bath tub there is no danger of electrocution.

I have never heard of a fire caused by cpap

The motor is just electric, not a diesel.

Your friend needs to address his OCD, because THAT is what will hurt him, not cpap.

Remember it is FDA approved.

Which means all those issues have been addressed before it was approved. Plus it has been in use all over the world for over 20 years.

It is approved for use on airplanes.

He needs therapy.

If you have been on CPAP for 17 years, you should have figured this out by now. If a person is wearing a nasal mask or pillows, all one needs to do if the power goes out is open their mouth to breathe. If wearing a full face mask, they ALL have anti asphyxia valves.

As far as his other weird worries... What about his refrigerator motor burning, or CO2 from his furnace, or lightning hitting his house. He may need outside professional help. Especially if these worries are keeping him from using his equipment.

Just one that I know of, a guy spent a night in a hotel, 4th floor. He had a small balcony outside his room, he was setting in a chair out there drinking, set his XPAP on the banister for use later. He knocked it off and it hit a woman in the head, killed her. The next day, the headline in the papers said: Woman killed by runaway CPAP Machine. That's the only one I heard about. Jim

I once suffered a painful blood blister when I pinched my finger in the humidifier door. Really hurt a lot. I ultimately decided against filing a lawsuit.

He wears a full face mask. The one thing that I thought of is that if he vomits into the mask and loses consciousness, could he drown?

He could drown washing the taste of vomit out of his mouth with a glass of water. XPAP would be blamed for that too, because Sleep Apnea with XPAP treatment causes everything, it's even causing N. Korea to Make Nukes. Jim

My first time on this forum. I am sad to read such immature and rude comments.

Tsk, tsk... no sense of humor (and obviously no knowledge of the history of the poster in question).

your first post, and I'm sad you're off to a roaring start of nagging uselessness.
